Forgot to add, next announcement will be "Mail Call." Back in the day ('70s) there was no email, so the mail COD was the only connection to home for the crew! In October1973 during the Yom Kippur War we were emergency deployed from WESTPAC to the I/O and then Arabian Sea. Took a COD three weeks to catch up to us. Mail outgoing/incoming was delayed :)
@kwaktak Жыл бұрын
It was much the same in the late 80s/early 90s. I was on Forrestal and even though we were an east coast carrier we were in the I/O and it took mail about a month to get to us and Dear John letters were still a thing. Hearing the COD buzzing overheard from the hangar deck was always a very emotional thing.

GW is just out of a 4 year reactor refueling, so their non-skid on the flight deck is unmolested. It won't stay that way. The landing area gets abused hard by the arresting hooks scraping the deck when the planes land.

Just dawned on me that it is the closest people routinely get to aircraft touching down . Maybe that is why carrier ops always are kinda surreal feeling because it is so unique . It's taken a lot of trial and error to make it look routine and calm .

LOL. I remember those. I think that they are the same airframe as the E2-C Hawkeye. A few times during my time on the Carl Vinson we recovered a C-1. 1 of those times it ended up sitting on deck next to the island waiting on an ignition part. I think it was a starting exciter for one of the magnetos. The engine ran fine without it, but would not fire while spinning on the starter.

Aways enjoyed seeing our aircraft in the break and whomever it was calling out AC numbers for the deck crew over the 1MC. Back in the day on the FID they would call the break the 180 and the 90... but you always knew in the 'daytime' pattern who was coming in. Miss that 1MC chatter for flight ops

I was ships company on the USS Theodore Roosevelt from 86 to 90. I had gotten a Red Cross message my grandma had passed while in the middle of the Med. They flew me off of the boat on a COD and to Rota Spain, then a United commercial flight home. When I returned, they reversed the process and I landed on the boat via the same COD with the same pilot. I just had timed it right with his flight schedule. An amazing experience. Watch the movie Hunt for Red October and that flight with Chris Farley is almost EXACTLY how it felt. Bumpy, noisy and rough.

A voiceover explaining what the heck were seeing would be awesome. Like why is that LSO holding a handle with a button in it?
@robertbutsch1802 Жыл бұрын
He’s holding it up to indicate the deck is foul. Happens twice - on a deck width no aircraft on it. Somebody may have been walking across or something. The switch itself is used to signal a wave-off if it be comes necessary.
@AA-xo9uw Жыл бұрын
That's the pickle switch. Allows the LSO to indicate a foul deck to approaching aircraft. Holding it over his head is a sign to others that the deck is foul without having to see the lights on the meatball.
@robertbutsch1802 Жыл бұрын
@@AA-xo9uw It’s for the LSOs to wave off airplanes for whatever reason. Most wave offs are not for foul decks but rather for inadequate approaches. They hold it in the air when the deck is foul to indicate they are aware of the situation.
