Simon, you are growing on me. Not only are you are a real good craftsman, but you also optimize and strife for a better process. This continued learning process, which you make transparent to us viewers, sets you apart from most of your collegues, at least from those, who bother to make youtube videos. Congrats to this video!

I always appreciate your videos. You could just be puttering around, chatting about this and that, and I'd watch. Thank you for taking the time to record what you do. I wonder how many young potters have been inspired and guided by your videos. A lasting legacy. Stay amazing sir!

I mix my bentonite with my silica dry and then add both to the water to solve the bentonite clumping problem.

Water in the wall would boil into a gas and cause the same (or greater) effect as trapped air. Just found your channel. Very interesting!

Another book on raw glazing is... Single Firing, the pros and cons, by Fran Tristram. It is part of the Ceramic Handbook series published by A & C Black of London in 1996 ISBN 0-7136-3902-4. The USA edition is published by Gentle Breeze Publishing of Oviedo Florida. ISBN 0-9650786-1-2. 128 pages with colour photo illustrations. As well as discussing the pros and cons of single firing, the book also gives detailed advice on the techniques involved, their history, choosing the right clay body, when to glaze.. wet, leather, dry, provides several suitable glaze recipes and how to make the glaze, decoration, raw glost, and the principles of single firing a kiln. A glossary explains all the terms used. Probably the best book available on Raw Firing. Although out of print, second hand copies are available.

I had a mug crack in several places when I tried to raw glaze, I didn't know to wet the outside so it's probably a nessary step. I will have to try this again.

really want to try this but i must wait till my finger and kiln heal up! How long do you wait after glazing to fire them. Also , how evenly does you down draft converted kiln fire ?I was resently given a small electric kiln that i need to convert , but it is real small (my old kiln is pretty much falling apart) and was considering your old external chimney design but with an expanded metal cage for the chimney ( for support) as there isnt much space inside. do you think the down draft will fire more evenly then my up draft /cross draft . Currently i get a diff of 2 cones between top and bottom shelf even with a long (1 hour) hold at the end of firing cycle...

Hi Simon, how many of your tankards had the indentations? Is it possible that for some reason your rim was thinner in that short space? Really enjoyed the video !

A few years ago I watched a documentary on youtube about an older potter that is still making pottery in the old traditions , digging the clay , making the glaze from what is found in the countryside and Raw glazing and single firing! I will try to find it and send you the link! I found the video It is about a Catawba Valley potter Burlon Craig. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWGcpYprd8aIqck
