Thanks for another great video. As soon as i found all the pieces of my blown mind and put them together again i am sure i am beginning to grasp what wavelets can do !! I will watch it a second and maybe third time. I would never have been able to understand it from just reading the explanation on rawpedia or wikipedia.

I tried that myself Hans, and failed! It took a 1on1 dissertation from Xavier for me to understand it.

I noticed that for me it works best to first only watch the video and not work along with you. Then watch it a second time and work along. I do this for the more complex stuff

Hello Mr. Astbury! Just dropping in to say that this video is absolutely phenomenal. I'm starting out with photography, currently own a used Nikon D5100. As costs are a major concern for me, I'm exclusively using RawTherapee and Darktable in my workflow (dabbled with Darktable only to go back sprinting to RawTherapee, DT just didnt seem intuitive enough, although I'm sure it's only a matter of practicing more!). Just applied the learnings from this video and the Denoise and Refine video to a portrait I shot during the night at ISO2000. I live in an apartment on the fifth floor and my jaw dropped as far down as the ground floor when i looked at the final output! Thank you for documenting RawTherapee with such detail and rigor!

Finally, after 10 month, I had time to go through your video and finally I got a first idea of how that wavelets work. Thank you very much, Andy. I can't keep up with the Rhythmus you produce these RawTherapee Tutorials, but I have them all in my to do list. For me RawTherapee is the one tool to work through a 1.000 to 1.500 pictures I take in a single event. And with RawTherapee I'm done, I don't have the time to process 1.000 pictures from a 5 hour event in Photoshop. RawTherapee allows me to work very efficient through this amount of pictures. Interestingly this is a point nobody mentions about RawTherapee.

A huge thanks for all these vids on Raw Therapee. I've been using the Raw Therapee PS combo since at least 2009 and have always thought there is something missing from my images that I could not manage to put my finger on. I'd say your RT tutorials have gone a very long way to solving my problems the devil is in the detail many thanks. I would rather use GIMP as apposed to PS as I originally used to do but feel PS has a certain look that people prefer.... perhaps that's reason enough to learn GIMP again :)

Hi Andy, The time wasn't an issue at all. I did notice its run time when this popped up, but given the subject matter I was only too happy to wait for the right time to get comfy and finally get a better understanding of wavelets. After all my years of using RT, I've messed about with wavelets and I have to say this is one of the best and most accessible introduction and explanations of wavelets. Thanks for taking the time to put this video together. 1 hour of my life well spent! :)

Well I used to think I was a true pixel peeper, now I realise I am merely an amateur lol. That's some complex stuff right there. Very clever stuff however. Not sure I do any photography that would require such absolute precision but none the less the benefits are clear. Thanks for blowing my mind again Andy 😁

Old Nikon D2Xs and a battered Sigma 180mm macro - I'd be lucky if I got £400 for the combo today. Megapixels doesn't trump quality though, and the two are not always synonymous 😬 You got a Flickr page or the like?

@@AndyAstbury No Flickr or the like, I loathe social media sites as a general rule. Used to have an Instagram account which I've not bothered with for the last two years. I guess I really should make the effort given social media offers an excellent platform for us picture taking types lol

Hi Andy, thank you for this wonderful video. One question: you applied contrast adjustments to the finer details (L1-3) only to highlights, and remaining levels only to shadows. Given that lower frequency details can be present both in highlights or shadows, what is the reason for applying them in this way?

Superb explanation. Based on this and on one of your other videos I have started to zoom out until the picture is about 7cm wide on the screen to see the major outlines. I then go into full screen mode and using one level at a time with a black or grey background find the level where just those outline show. I then give a contrast boost to that level to add shape to the picture. Does that sound a sensible thing to be doing?
@AndyAstbury4 жыл бұрын
Hi there Richard, nice to see you here and welcome! It's vital that you view the image at 'smaller than fit to screen' many times while processing, and changing the background colour too is a big help - you can see the 'big picture' when zoomed out, and swapping background colours/tones can really show the overall image contrast. However, you don't always 'see' the effect of some adjustments until you are at 50% or 100% - wavelet adjustments are hard to see at lower than 100%. But in general terms zooming out helps visualise a 'gallery hanging' so when you think of it in those terms you can understand its value. So yes, it sounds like you are on the right track Richard🍻👍
@richardregal42084 жыл бұрын
Nice tutorial. I use wavelets a slightly different way that I want your take on. Following one of your other videos I zoom out until the image is about 2½inches wide on the screen so that I can see what the picture is about and what the major outlines are. I then go into full screen mode and activte wavelets with a black or grey backgrond one level at a time. I look for the level that gives me the level of detail that has the outlines I noticed (usually 6-8) and then bump up that level a litle to add some “shape” before doing any other contrast adjustments. Do you think that makes sense?
@AndyAstbury3 жыл бұрын
If it works for Richard then there's nothing wrong there that I can see 🍻👍

Could Clarity in ACR and Lightroom actually be doing this automatically in the background based on the contrast distribution of the image?
@AndyAstbury3 жыл бұрын
No Eigil - clarity increases/decreases contrast in middle TONES, whereas RT wavelets works by shifting contrast based on DETAIL level NOT TONE level.

@@AndyAstbury I've previously just been using Windows Photo Editor mostly, I find it quite simple & easy to use for jpegs compared to Raw therapee which blew my mind when I first tried it, I'm certainly not going to subscribe to Lightroom, so I guess I'm going to have to stick with it, because I'd like to to start shooting raw..
