For several years I was part of a painting group like this. We would paint a model and for whoever had time, would stay after the session to critique and discuss the work. We loved art and loved just talking about it. It was a very valuable time because you could see what other people thought was successful or not so successful on a piece. I don’t get why they need a winner. Who cares. I would rather know what people’s problems were while painting and if they overcame them, how they did it.

Yes, we took the decision that everybody should paint from life. To be fair to PAOTY artists, their set up (celebrity models who can't stay still, lighting optimised for TV and not the artists) means they don't really have the choice.

I don't get the people complaining about it being a competition. I think they're fun to participate in and they've pushed me to do some of my best work. But i also go into them knowing that there is a degree of subjectivity to judging art so i don't take the results (successful or not) too seriously. If you don't like them don't do them, but don't discourage those of us who like them

Painting videos like these are great for us to see different approaches by each artist. I have a question regarding lights that were attached to some easels. Does anyone know what kind of lights they were using and are these typical lights painters often use? I use LED tube light for filmmaking with a decent CRI rating which I can toggle color temperature and intensity. I wonder what other painters recommend.

Nothing fancy - just something to get a bit more light on the painting without affecting the light on the model!
