Back in the day- circa 2004- I probably should have shot RAW. My cameras back then had terrible auto WB and terrible exposure latitude. Back then, though, storage was much more expensive. Fast memory cards were not cheap. So I made do with jpeg. These days memory is much cheaper, but my more modern camera gets the WB and exposure right much more reliably. I used to spend hours with Photoshop back then because I had to if I wanted to get usable pics. I don’t wanna do that any more. Could I get better results with RAW and Lightroom? Yes, I could. But as an amateur jpeg is good enough.
@alanc64163 жыл бұрын
I just started RAW+ JPEG , because the new XT4 is dual card. Given the cost of storage nowadays, it’s becoming less a topic as years go by. I find 90% of the JPEG were already acceptable and don’t bother editing in RAW. However, since I was deliberately testing difficult scenes, 10% must be edited in RAW, and those really show the difference. So I’ll keep shooting JPEG + RAW from now on, and only edit in RAW when necessary. I also keep that RAW copy just in case on the NAS. I’m not a professional, just casual shooter

I shoot portraits in studio with a D800, I use JPG Fine, no problems. I can cleanly pull 2 stops from the JPG but I rarely need to. I work hard to get Exposure correct in camera. I have a D3 ( wildlife ) and the D800 ( portraits and landscapes ) and have both set to 4:5 Aspect as I print mostly 8x10 and 16x20 using an Epson P900 printer. I also expose for the highlights. Like I said, no problem with 2 full stops from the shadows if needed. Never shot Canon so not sure if it is true for all makers or just Nikon.

My X-T2 makes great JPGs too with the film simulations. It's great for social media during an event, or for family stuff when I don't have access to a computer for a while.
@BenjaminFreddie6 жыл бұрын
Richard Dufault - totally! That’s one of the reasons I switched to Fuji from Canon awhile ago. I also like using the film simulations for my videos even if I plan to color grade them a bit. Chrome is probably my favorite for photos.

I always shoot both raw and jpeg. Darktable and the Nikon software start from the settings in the camera (SD, Portrait, Vivid, etc.) and you can edit from there and then export to another jpeg file or open the file in GIMP.
@EyeAmDiamondphotog2 жыл бұрын
And it seems like depending the camera determines if you should/could use JPEG (mirrorless)!!!
@harj-spp85476 жыл бұрын
100% valid point and reasons to shoot jpeg. It's smart and very effcient when needed, as described in the video. I also use nikons picture control utility, download some fuji, kodak and vsco film emulsion looks, tweak to my taste on the pc and then load several to my cameras. I can then either shoot the preset with jpeg on-the-fly ready for uploading, or shoot raws only and quicktly use the built-in editor to apply a preset/crop etc and then save as jpeg. No snapseed type app required. Upload. Boom I'm done.

photographers vs photographers lols. who cares about what we see. its our audience. they don't care about us .using diff lens or are we shooting in jpeg or raw lol.

I like both RAW and JPEG. Sometimes I just like to upload a jpeg to my instagram because its easier and faster but sometimes I want to edit my pictures and if I edit them I always choose to edit the raw. But I don't have much space left on my pc and I noticed that I shot already 15GB of pictures just today... And I can't decide should I go for RAW + BASIC quality jpeg, RAW only or HIGH quality jpeg only?
@obsidian006 жыл бұрын
I don't know who you are anymore...
@KAR120C696 жыл бұрын
Shoot jpg with raw being saved to card. Use jpg to sort photos for correct focus/framing/etc. then edit raw files crop/sharpness/etc for final photo. Most times, because I get it correct in camera, there is little or no editing needed. Still like having a raw file to work with because it gives me more room to edit & be more creative than a jpg if I decide on a different look where if I shot scene in jpg only I'm limited. For some people it might not matter but why would I want to limit what I can do with a photo if it was shot only in jpg? Memory cards & other backup methods are much cheaper now days so for me there's no good reason to shoot only jpg. And for those that only do jpg today they might be happy with their results... for now. But what if in many years from now they look back at their photos and want to edit them differently? Maybe they'll have better software or other reasons to edit their photos. Those people will have been robbed of the chance because they thought "jpg was good enough right now"... and they won't have a raw file to work with when they'll wish they did because of what??? 🤔

If one needs to spend that much time on a raw file editing etc , dam don't over edit the sky can be only so blue , the grass so green and the clouds so white

I've been DYING to ask you this question for a while know. Thanks to you, I'm hybrid shooting. Like you, I have D850s. My question to you is why not use Fuji for hybrid shooting? The focusing on the Nikon bodies suck for video. I'm sure you have a strong opinion and I'd love to know. I'd even pay you to have a conversation!
@svanteekholm73346 жыл бұрын
Personally I love the in-camera RAW converter on the Nikon bodies. It's like a micro-Lightroom that you always have with you. I would shoot RAW, convert it to JPEG in-camera in like 15 seconds then send that picture via wifi to my phone and then up to social media.

To be honest I shoot jpeg 90% of the time. I shoot with Fuji and I’ve gotten so used to getting good results from the Fuji jpegs that I’ve made Lightroom presets made to compliment the various Fuji Film simulation jpegs. It has made my workflow easier for sure and I have not yet experienced a time when I regretted it.
