Hi! So how did you seal the pores? Bleaching really roughens the wood and brings up the grain, so you sand, but you do need something to seal and finish and nourish the stripped wood or it becomes brittle and cracks over time

@tammykimble66174 жыл бұрын
I would love to do this on an old dining table that will need to be striped first, but then would love to keep the look of the raw wood. But since it's a dining table what would you recommend to seal it with to avoid water rings from drinking glasses? Love the look if your pieces!!! Just besutiful!

Glad you liked the video! It’s tricky sealing raw wood bc it will darken it. The only thing I’ve had any luck with that hasn’t darkened the color is white wax. After the wax cures its pretty durable and most times you can buff out stains. Def do a spot test! Let me know how it turns out!

I love the look of this and I like the whitewash, I was just wondering, the lamp and the candlesticks, did you paint those? if so what paint did you use? I love those too that's really dark matte black, it's not just a spray paint, is it chalk paint?
@blacksheephouse2 жыл бұрын
I did paint them, I used a chalk paint by rustoleum in the color charcoal. the lamp has texture under the paint from wall joint compound, I chose not to seek the paint to keep matte finish and for my purposes they have held up great no chips at all

Love that piece!! I do have a question for you.... I just recently stripped and sanded a dark cherry stained nightstand down to the raw wood with the exception of some dark stain left in the details and carvings (very early 2000’s classic cherry bedroom set) however I don’t mind that bc it kinda looks like dark Brown antique wax in those crevices- also, the wood tones vary on the doors and the drawer fronts. But I really love the natural wood. I picked up GF FLAT OUT FLAT because I knew that it would prob have a cup or plays sitting on it at some point. So I figured I better seal it since it’s a nightstand. I figured it would darken a little bit so I was hesitant but the trade off was protection right?? Well, one thin coat on one door and not only dark but RED here I come!!! Panicking I wiped as much as I could off let it dry and sanded lightly by hand. Whew! So my next thought was taking some leftover white wax. Which was better but kinda gave it a more pickled look than I wanted. So I stopped and starting looking on KZbin. Saw your video and the blonde girl Pine something. And I’ve come to the conclusion that bleach should help me get rid of that red that’s still in there. Sorry for rambling- my question is I have gotten white wax in the crevices and hard to sand spots, so would the bleach eat that off you think or should I attempt to remove it before bleaching??
@blacksheephouse4 жыл бұрын
Lisa Jackson, oh no! Top coating the bleached wood is a much talked about topic among refinishers and DIYers. I vote no and have decide I will just sand it if I get something on it. But that bleed through is tricky.. Being the impatient diyer I am, I’d probably just take my chances and apply the bleach assuming that any white wax will remain but I generally like the look of white wax. But I doubt the bleach would remove the wax. You run the risk of it being splotchy if you don’t at least sand off all the flat surfaces but it sounds like you already did that. Hope that helps and hope it turns out!
@lisajackson47844 жыл бұрын
I went ahead and gave it a light sanding again. Then brought them outside in a bright sunny day. I used a big 4” brush and a bucket of straight household bleach. Laid them flat and I did about 4 coats of bleach letting the sun dry each coat in between, then gave it a good wipe down with a rag and water. Totally worked!! There were some really yellow spots that just wouldn’t lighten up but then I applied the white wax and did a little heavier on those yellow spots and it was perfect! The white wax helped even out any splotches. All the blood sweat and tears was worth it!

Oh man! That makes this finish a challenge, you could try to paint the door in a color that matches the raw wood or you could buy a piece of wood laminate that matches... but I would probably just paint the whole thing to look like wood. The only thing I’m not sure of is the console itself doesn’t seem to have any sort of veneer or sealant so I’m scared to sand it down and potentially change the shape of the wood itself? Should I just go ahead and bleach it or try and sand it first? Any advice is so appreciated!!

On the solid wood nightstand with the red/ orange tones towards the end of the video, what strip would you recommend to use that would take the red tones out before you bleach it? I have two solid wood pieces with red tones with one being antique. I want them both stripped down sanded and bleached down to the natural wood but not sure if Citristrip would work on them.
@blacksheephouse3 жыл бұрын
I'm not a huge fan of chemical strippers bc they are so messy but I would use quick strip 15 minute formula if you are going to go that route instead of sanding. If I had a lot of red tone I would bleach llike I did in this video and then I would do a white wash or a taupe wash after. I have another video where I did a cherry wood dresser and I do that exact technique with the white wash after bleaching. Thanks for watching and I hope that helps!

With the varnish gone I can just bleach? I used the zissners wood bleach on one after sanding like crazy. Could I skip the sanding part?

I’m trying to turn my 1970’s, light mauve laminate bathroom vanity into a rustic bleached wood look. I’m going to practice on salvaged laminate doors but I’m thinking slick stick, white or oatmeal, or light almond chalk paint, and then a couple of coats of very light colored gel stain. I saw a light gel stain at Menard’s but I can’t remember the color name. Then maybe some gator hide to seal and resist water. If anyone is reading these comments and has any suggestions, please reply. If it looks too fakey, I’m going to hate it. Thank you. Great video as always 😘
