Not in 1999, Portis Freshman year. James Jackson started with Portis as the backup and Najee as the FB slash 3rd string. Room doesn't become Legendary until 2001 when McGahee and Frank start to play. James Jackson played ahead of Portis in 99 and 00. THAT is on CP. They gave Jackson the job in 99 and it wasn't until the Washington game in 00 that it was clear Portis needed the ball. I was part of the Program from 98 to 2001.

@@mush930Agreed. People often conflate the RB rooms across ‘99 and ‘01. It was that specific ‘01 room that was ridiculous. For someone who was there, how special was Najeh before the injuries?
@mush930Ай бұрын
@@Ginga He was good but he didnt have the speed or wiggle of the other backs. Just too good not to play though. 99 he was hurt so he didn't really get a chance to show the abilities and by 2000 Portis was number 2 soon to be 1. But as a pass catcher Najeh was fantastic and an awesome weapon at fullback. For him to get drafted in the 4th round say quite a bit for aguy that touched the ball 37 times as a senior.

Love what Portis says about blocking. I felt the same way. I got moved from Guard to Half Back because I was undersized for a Guard, was fast, and was knocking blocks off just off the line. That was when I was 9 years old in my first year of Pop Warner. Didn't stop being a starting running back until end of high school ball. Once you made that first Statement Run Someone Over, it changed the rest of the game back then. I mostly saw Arm Tackles and Leg Dives the rest of the game.

From EJ to Portis to Willis. Literally the best blocking tailbacks in the league. Soldinger was like.. if you wanna play, you will block. @@troylee4196Final comment. Portis also wanted out of Denver, things weren't meshing for him with Shanahan. It's insane they got Champ Bailey one up for him when it was known Portis had to be traded and Denver had the reputation of "any back will do well here" because of Mike Shanahan's Zone Blocking Scheme that worked incredibly well with that Offensive Line.
