. “As his daughter, I can tell you that what my dad doesn't know about diving and the water, is not worth knowing. Diving has and still is his major passion and long may it continue. Despite his age, he can still recall where every relic was found and where it originated. You'll never hear a story told better, than told by Ray.”

At 66 just watching your dad has given the the impetus to get back diving, I don’t half miss it. They don’t make them like your dad and mine come to that, he was a Devonport rating, your dad is an underwater Fred Dibnah, bet he could tell a yarn 👍

I hope to see you one day and have a catch up, till then, enjoy my friend and thank you for the pleasure of time I had spent with you. A true gent

I first came across Ray, on the Arctic Seal in, or round about 1980, I was a sat diver, he was diving supervisor. He is a legend, I've done many a bell run, with him on the surface with his headphones on, he would be watching what you were busy with on the screen and would know what you were going to ask for, before you even asked. If ever there was a legend in the oil field diving game, he would certainly be one. Mick Mulvaney.

Ray was one of my instructors at Bovi when I did my Bad Lads course in the eighties - he had a red setter dog who used to sit in the decompression chamber. When our course finished and we had our party, Ray gave a speech wearing pink bunny ears - still got a photo of it. Learnt a lot from this man....Legend.

Nice one Ray, Nice to see your still upsetting Neptune & throwing yourself in the ogin!! Have great memories of Bovisand & Bergen in the last century! Keep on paddling, there seems to be a few of us still around - remember, he who dies with the most toys wins - you must be in the lead with that lot!!

Sailed with Ray and my brother Fred McNally on the Arctic Seal 1978 and looking at Ray A Life Underwater brought a lump to my throat as Ray was a real genuine person as my brother Fred was.I also tendered divers using the Standard Gear in Liverpool and Birkenhead Docks 1962 moving all their equipment on a handcart and off a small dive boat and when they searched for lost cargo or lock gate chains in black water you could be on that hand pump for a long time as you were the only tender / boatman come dogsbody for every one involved. brings back fond memories hope you are still diving into your eighties Ray and thanks Amanda for this film also Bob Kirkham for informing me of it

It takes a brave man to use hand pumped air through a single hose to breathe/ inflate the suit. No bail out facility. With all the dead weight required to sink the diver if the pump fails, hose ruptures, or suit seal fails, you are dead....... I am priveledged to have used standard gear, it is surprisingly comfortable when at depth, but you have to constantly adjust your buoyancy, or you start to float up or get squeezed..equally bad...if you start to ascend out of control, the suit will burst and send you south.Every stroke of the pump can be heard via the air hose or bag as a hiss. the strokes get faster as you descend as the tender has to maintain over pressure to keep you alive. The early saturation divers were in a very dangerous environment. They never had the safeguards that we have in place nowadays.. My hat is off to Ray and his collegues of the day...Slack the diver!!

@allanmorris14386 жыл бұрын
Yep nothing wrong with that, I know Health and Safety Exec and Association of Diving Contractors, IMCA don’t approve of SCUBA for most commercial diving ops as it consumes more air/gas, but it is no different than diving an AGA or other full face mask, like the police divers use on SCUBA under HSE Pt 3 and 4, I know commercially it is frowned upon as there has to be multiple gas sources, ie main gas/air from umbilical, via topside compressor and HP backup through dive panel to diver and then diver worn Bailout/scuba attached on EGS side of helmet/mask manifold it is designed for it, part of the reason for the dial a breath to adjust pressure changes when switched from main gas to bailout, bailout is slightly higher pressure to shut one way valve on helmet/mask to stop emergency gas supply and eventually divers internals going back up the umbilical.
