Lovely story. In truth, there were three legends there as Ray himself was easily the best vent act I've ever seen. His dummy had a dummy for God sake!

I’ve only recently discovered Ray Alan and lord Charles for myself, and I can tell you this aging , cynical hippie finds such sheer delight in their routines thanks to KZbin. There should be a full DVD of as many of their comedic stylings.

The greatest ventriloquist of them all and just one of the many fantastic entertainers this country has produced. So sad that most of them from his era have now gone or are very very old and no longer able to perform.

Stan and Babe....The greatest double act there's ever been and it's so nice to hear that the duo I loved so much growing up as a child in the 60's were such down to earth lovable people.

Stan used to write to fans personally, and he even had his number in the public phone book

People of a certain age grew up watching Ray Alan and Lord Charles. Not forgetting Shari Lewis. Currently reading "Laurel & Hardy: The Magic Behind the Movies" - the gold standard in writing about the work of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Another good read is "Stan and Ollie: The Roots Of Comedy".

How many chat show guests of today's calibre can tell a story like that?

And that's what is wrong with the world today! Giants like Laurel and Hardy admonished and admired those who worked with them in the way you'd have thought would have been the other way around.

It may be in the Inventory of the Thomas W. Sefton Laurel and Hardy Collection, at the Loyola Marymount University in LA. Contents: "8 archival document boxes; 3 oversize boxes, 3 records storage boxes, 7 oversize folders". The Inventory apparently contains Stan's personal autograph book.
