The prior year Ray had success with a remake of "Yesterday", so he returned to the Lennon/McCartney catalog and chose this beauty. And again, it returned him to the top 40. The gospel touch really worked with this song. But I have to admit, the studio recording is preferable over this live version. Loved seeing it anyway.

I remember watching this back in '68. I was a senior in high school, playing in the jazz band. We also sampled from the Beatle's songbook. Kudos to Ed for showcasing the myriad of black musical talent, during a very divisive time in America's history. I'd like to believe it was music, the one thing we all have in common regardless of race, creed, or color, that helped guide us to a place of greater tolerance and respect for one another, through the succeeding decades. I pray that we don't lose that.

He covered this song and released it as a single in 1968. He even preformed it in his live album. It was common industry practice back then for artists to do cover songs with fresh new arrangements. If you scroll through the channel you’ll see how many artists came on Ed’s show to preform a cover song

@@aminsmith9657 Love this but not a fan of Aretha's, she plays it way too fast. You need the tempo to understand the drama and tragedy in the song. And she starts by saying "I'M ELEANOR RIGBY" which makes the song pointless.
