I grew up listening to ray charles. I am now 56 years old. My dad and grandma would sing to me. My dad would dance with me . i laugh and cry when i listen now. Rip grandma dad and ray. The memories will live with me and i smile through those tears. They will be with me in my heart i close my eyes and drift back..... No one but mr. Ray charles charles could do a song that could make me feel that way again. God bless you ray and thank you for your music you gave to the world

I LOVE Hank Senior's version of this. But, Ray Charles's version is probably the greatest thing I've ever heard. RIP to both men. Love and respect both

One of the only guys I'd just as soon hear sing a Hank Williams song as Hank himself...a place I don't offer anyone else.

Hank Williams and Ray Charles. There's a pair you can't beat. Close your eyes and let the music just take you on wings.

There is no one you can compare to Ray Charles. One of a kind. Others may do the same song but not as Ray did.

On this day in 1963 {April 28th} Ray Charles appeared in concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City... At the time his covered version of "Take These Chains from My Heart" was at #19 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; twenty-seven days later on May 25th, 1963 it would peak at #8 {for 1 week} and spent 11 weeks on the Top 100... Exactly one year earlier on April 28th, 1962 he was performing at the Donnelly Memorial Theater in Boston, Massachusetts... And at that time his "Hide 'Nor Hair" was at #23 and the B-side, "At the Club", was at #45 on the Top 100... On April 28th, 1987 Mr. Charles addressed the U.S. Congress concerning funding for hearing research, he was quoted as saying 'My eyes are my handicap, but my ears are my opportunity'... 'The Genius', born Ray Charles Robinson, passed away on June 10th, 2004 at the age of 73... May he R.I.P.

..."he was one of the first performers to mix gospel, R & B and jazz"...AND COUNTRY!!! Which is what this track is! The three genres mentioned in your description were already the domain of black performers but for a black man with roots in the gospel music of the south to bring "country n western" into the mix...well that really was something new!

Take these chains from my heart and set me free You've grown cold and no longer care for me All my faith in you is gone but the heartaches linger on Take these chains from my heart and set me free Take these tears from my eyes and let me see Just a spark of the love that used to be If you love somebody new let me find a new love too Take these chains from my heart and set me free Give my heart just a word of sympathy Be as fair to my heart as you can be Then if you no longer care For the love that's beating there Take these chains from my heart and set me free
