The 'Lily May' in your song was my great grandmother. Fred's real surname was Bache, but he appears to have changed his name to Broadrick prior to the Great War. He was clearly a wayward lad, being sentenced to 3 months' hard labour in January 1913, for being found on enclosed premises. As a serving British soldier myself, I am torn between feeling sorry for Fred, or feeling that he let the rest of his comrades down, when he went AWOL and later deserted on several occasions. Nice song by the way.

Thank you Jonny for that message. I was asked to write this song by the Muzeik Zentrum in Dranouter which is beside the small graveyard where Fred was buried. I felt quite a heavy responsibility, speaking on Fred's behalf in this song. I have had no experience of military life, much less of a war situation, so your compliment both as a family member and a serving soldier is appreciated. I just felt the tragedy of a young man put on trial for his life without a lawyer, and the irony of his comrades having to shoot one of their more effective soldiers. Pardoned now, Rest in peace Fred.
