When Showtime announced Ray Donovan would end after 7 seasons (on a cliffhanger), viewers were devastated. Ray Donovan was always more than just an entertaining show about a Hollywood fixer. After 7 years, it had become one of television’s most sophisticated, detailed and unflinchingly honest studies of the effects of childhood/interpersonal trauma & sexual abuse. Liev Schreiber’s subtle, layered performance of the deeply traumatised title character earned him multiple award nominations, and the supporting cast were all equally extraordinary.
So, I wanted to make a Ray character study/tribute that highlighted the stellar work the show did in portraying the legacy of unaddressed trauma. Whether it was emotional, physical or sexual abuse, parental neglect & mistreatment, addiction, mental illness or suicide - Ray Donovan explored it all with a sensitivity and accuracy rarely seen on television. For this reason, and so many others, the show & these characters absolutely deserve a proper ending, and I truly hope Showtime can make that happen.

Most people haven't the faintest notion what PTSD, much less Complex-PTSD, is. And because they aren't affected by it, they can't relate to the characters' visceral experiences of it. So, I echo your comment. The series speaks unusually well, and with care and sensitivity, to those who -- in their suffering, isolation and struggle -- can indeed relate to the subject... all too well.* As, clearly, you do. The series validates such harrowing imprints on a life, including its inter-dynamics within a whole family. That, in itself, is reason for kudos to "Ray Donovan." (And to Melsta17 for the fine video compilation here.) The series is helmed to perfection by Schreiber. His supple insights, and precise command of nuance and layered complexity, infuse and power the entire show. He is its catalyst. Series creator and writer Ann Biderman must've been on cloud nine when Schreiber came aboard. None other could have embodied, at such a consummate level, her vision of the titular character. But, then, Schreiber is among the most brilliant, literate and articulate of actors -- if not the greatest Shakespearean stage actor of our time. An exceedingly intelligent individual, his depth of artistry, versatility, and rich spectrum of knowledge is superlative -- extremely rare traits in a screen actor. And, apparently, whose humble generosity with fellow actors must be no less than a joy for them. I wish you healing, Lorraine Valentine. Lasting healing. I know it's hard, incredibly hard. But with the right tools and support system, and with dogged determination, you can do it. Tragically, Ray Donovan could not escape the nightmare. But that's a legacy that need not be yours, nor that of other survivors. May wellness, freedom, and inner peace be yours. One day at a time. *Apropos Schreiber's understated, compelling portrayal of the Boston Globe's then-executive editor, Marty Baron, in the film "Spotlight" (2015). Directed by Tom McCarthy, the movie is based on the real-life team of investigative journalists who exposed the Catholic Church's hierachy of systemic conspiracy and complicity with rampant child sexual abuse among its ranks. If you haven't seen this movie, please do. The film has its own superlative ensemble cast. Every actor in it, from major to minor roles, is superb. (This includes Mark Ruffalo, another exceptionally rare and brilliant, articulate and versatile actor in a unique class all his own.) Schreiber, as ever, nailed his portrayal of Baron to perfection (and after only about two hours of time spent with Baron - incredible). His character portrayal is the anchor of the story (and of the film itself). You simply cannot imagine anyone but Schreiber in the role. "Spotlight" deservedly earned the Best Picture award at the Oscars. (Given the subject, and all the interwoven components of the film, director McCarthy was truly robbed of a Best Director win at the Academy Awards.) Spotlight is one of the best, most powerful, ever-relevant films the U.S. has ever produced. So, a fitting complement to the central thread of the Ray Donovan series. I’ve never enjoyed a tv show the way I did while watching this I was filled with so much emotion when I watched this I related in many ways to some of the trama endured in this series. Was sad 2 see it end. I’m excited about the movie finaly a proper ending coming soon.

uh oh never seen this show, but from what i see he had an incredibly similar childhood to me , my abuser was my priest and i had to take care of my mom as an 8 year old. very grateful for the therapy i put myself in otherwise i could have easily ended up just as violent. sometimes the urge to kill my abuser or myself is so overwhelming that i pass the fuck out or bang my head against a wall for hours.

ps. it would be really cool to see you do one for Micky, Jon voight played the character so well, and he was a tremendous character, he was a bad father, he wronged them so many times, but if push came to shove, and someone wanted his family's head, micky would never faulter and show he does love them. Seeing how well you made this tribute to Ray, I think you would do a perfect one for micky, showing despite being terribly flawed man and father, he still loved his kids.

Ray Donovan should be called 'How Sociopaths Are Made'. Sociopaths cannot feel love. All they can do is observe and replicate behaviour that serves their purpose - to survive. It is long overdue time this cause and effect was better know and not just treated as drama. There's something really sick about that.
