@Andrew Fenstermacher well I can't speak for other prog nerds but he's an absolute phenom and my number 2 (Baard Kolstad is a close 3rd) surpassed only by Gavin Harrison in 1st because he's just sort of God-like to me so there's thar. But yeah Ray is so good, and he's come so incredibly far from Aquarius

If Matt Garstka is the mathematician of drumming, Ray Hearne is a mad scientist. His work has continually improved over Haken's albums and is now reaching insane levels on Fauna. You never know what genius parts he will craft, but he will absolutely never disappoint. Unbelievable musician.
@AtlasMeCH1 Жыл бұрын
I'd say Matt Garstka in the mad scientist and Hearne is the reasonable artist....
@adamkoyn792 Жыл бұрын
Pure chops-wise, yeah Garstka is the fuckin man right now; he's unbelievable. Ray Hearne is something else though that I can't quite put my finger on... definitely a mad scientist in the sense that he experiments with his phrasing like NO other drummer in progressive rock really does. And, I couldn't agree more about how much he's improved from Aquarius til now... it's like night and day. His drum compositions on Fauna are just incredible.

Ray and Bobby Jarzombek are by far my biggest drum hero of all time. They have a things in common: drum parts sounds incredibly musical and they almost hide themself under the track, but when you as a drummer, start looking into them, they are almost impossible to read, and absurdly complicated, and so hard to study. I think that this kind of complexity, subservient to the song is the apex of what a prog drummer can achieve. the two mentioned before are the masters of it. MONSTERS

Old Haken: We can't play the same Verse (A section) twice. Let's compose a variation. Current Haken: And we can neither play the second chorus like the first. Let's compose another variation for that too (Carousel, Nightingale, Taurus and Invasion are good examples).
