Absolutely right, and your reply reminds me to correct an error. Because Greg Leisz is such a renowned pedal steel guitar session player, I assumed he played it on the album version of this song. Checked the musician credits in my CD booklet and found it's actually Eric Heywood, shown above on the far right. Check out his live performance with Ray on Letterman.

This version really misses that gorgeous pedal steel accompaniment provided by the incomparable Greg Leisz, pictured above on the far left. I can't think of another song where that instrument was put to better use than it was in the studio version of "Beg Steal or Borrow."

I read where Ray was influenced by Stephen Stills (ya think?). Apparently he was more influenced by one of Stephen's squeezes on this one. Sweet Judy Blue Eyes -- sounds a lot like her, no?
