I heard this song while waiting in the dentist's office and I *HAD* to look it up. This man's voice is beautiful; it's like a whisper-rasp that kind of reminds me of fog... But it also sounds like melted, slippery butter. Whew! 🙌🏽

15 years ago... I was 23 living out of my car (by choice) in the mountains of Colorado when I heard this on a local sunday morning radio show. It fit right in with where I was at that time in my life and introduced me to Ray's music. Never regretted a moment of those years I spent roaming. Life surely changes.

I was born in Colorado and made a trip out there a few years ago when my beloved 90 year old grandma passed away. I was sitting in a car in front of her house, next to the house where l was born. My grandma and her house was my sanctuary, where the world couldn't get me. This song came on the radio while l was sitting there, and it was the first time l ever heard it. Before l knew it l had tears pouring down my face. I knew my life was never going to be the same. No grandma, and no sanctuary. I was the polar opposite of the character in the song...l would have given anything to be back in my hometown, among the small talk and the chatter. I escaped it and found nothing. Nothing.

OG here. At any point of your life you care to pick, the opinions of co-workers and other strangers will be worth precisely a pitcher of warm spit. I'm no big deal. But because I "followed my heart" and BELIEVED in these few things/concepts, they came to me. The girl, the house, the dog(s), the bike, the career and more, all because I didn't GAF what others thought. And surprise, surprise, guess what? In that era acting like you big-time didn't gaf would get you noticed by the girls with sparkle in their eyes. Think about it this way. When Prince Rogers Nelson was born, there was no "slot" waiting for him in the music business or the movie industry. He had nothing to make himself stand out, seemingly, as a 5'2" Black American born in the Rust Belt. But he believed in himself and his music to the extent that one of his nicknames would end up being "His Royal Badness." 'Nuff Ced. Now go be great in YOUR way.
