I grew up listening to the Doors and everything was about Jim...it wasn't till I was much older that I realized the musical talent of Ray Manzarek. Man was a genius. We miss you Ray! Rock on!

Ray’s explanation of the machinations of this song just make me love it more. It’s been my favorite song most of my life. Respect and Rest In Peace Ray. The Doors music lives forever. Light My Fire, #1 in July of 1967…55 years later and remains a classic.

This has to be one of the most beautiful songs -- if you listen to all of the different singer’s rendition of it - Jose Feliciano, Julie London, Dusty Springfield, on and on and each one makes it sound like the first time you are hearing it.

I loved Ray's manic-crazy keyboard playing from the first time I heard LMF in mid-June 1967, on its way to its destiny of #1 (of 3) on the week ending Jul. 29, through Aug. 12, in that last, magnificent Summer! What a sad day it was when I learned he died of cancer, at 74, treated in Germany on May 20, 2013; 10 long years ago. b. Feb. 12, 1939 Chicago, IL - May 20, 2013 Rosenheim, GER). He received a Master of Fine Arts degree in cinematography in 1965 from UCLA. During this period, he met future wife Dorothy Fujikawa and undergraduate film student Jim Morrison. Married her on December 21, 1967, with Morrison and his longtime companion Pamela Courson as witnesses. Manzarek and Fujikawa remained married until his death. In March 2013, Manzarek was diagnosed with a rare cancer called cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) and traveled to Germany for special treatment. R.I.P., Ray Manzarek, forever with Jim and raising R&R and hell in Heaven!

Ray is one of the real gentlemen of rock music, a kind human being, a genius pianist. What always struck me as wonderful was the love between them, if you listen to them talking about Morrison it's only love. Until we meet again Ray ❤

I return to this video every now and then to be mesmerized by this mans skill on the keyboard. Especially the Coltrane part that he demonstrates and his improv on top of the bass line at 1:37. The fact that he just casually talks through this whole thing while playing... what a musician! Amazing!
