DC4 sharpening stone give-away 2016! please participate • Fallkniven DC4 GiveAwa...
* please visit my own bushcraft channel kzbin.info/door/0k9...
This video is made as an instruction video on how to sharpen and handle your knife.
This video also covers tent pegs, nettle cordage and one cut out scene.
All rights belong to Ray Mears.
Please visit www.Raymears.com
Extra information:
Sharpening in this way is a good basic way to start sharpening.
In no way I'm saying that this is the only and best way to do it.
My own sharpening differce alot from this, still this sharpening will keep your knife capable and sharp for your survival/bushcraft situation.
You will eventually take your own path in sharpening.

First rule of bushcraft / survival , always avoid injury . It weakens and could become infected . Good advice from Ray , safe use of a cutting blade . 👍🇬🇧

Very good, necessary basics, of a type that many survival writers often ignore. This is the sort of thing that we should all know BEFORE watching his other vids, esp. the parts about knife use.

There are only two men in the field of bushcraft, survival, and conservation that have earned my 100% respect, admiration, and support: Ray, and the Canadian Mors Kochanski. Very short on bullshit, sensationalism, marketing and pop culture; but very long on sincerity, education, dedication, character, and the love of Mother Earth. Not a good chemistry for TV ratings and cash flow; but the earth, and humble humans, are better off because of them.

The "Woodlore" knife is what he uses on the Jap wetstones; and yes, ridiculous to even consider buying. Here in the states, and one I know of in Canada, you can find quite a few excellent knife makers offering similar, and in some cases, even better bush tools. But the more popular they get, the more expensive they become; for that reason, I won't mention any names, but leave the research up to the reader. I would give my left nut to get Ray and Mors Kochanski to do a video together.

Anyone that is starting out knife sharpening I would recommend being more gentle then Mr. Mears. A lot of the things he does can actually roll your edge or give you an inconsistent grind if rushed.

Thank you for this video and all of the other videos likewise. You really are a great teacher of life skills. I didn't go camping as a child so, I didn't learn a lot of these techniques. However, I have practiced the skills taught in many of your videos and now pass those life skills to my son. Thank you and keep up the awesome work!

I really like how dave became more dedicated and softer now that he has participated in dual survival. To bad hes out, he was way cooler than this new guy. His youtube channel is very informative, way better for learning things than watching dual survival. Great thing about ray is that he explains alot in his shows.

No, Grylls knows his stuff. Being an SAS reservist, he's tough as fuck. Don't get me wrong - I love all of Ray Mears's stuff, he's the best, without question. And he's probably one of the best at imparting his knowledge to "ordinary" people, like you and I. But please don't dismiss Grylls. Sure, when he retired from the SAS he took the option of making money from TV deals, when it was offered to him - tell me you wouldn't have done the same, given the chance ? But he's still a hard-core SAS soldier, with a lot of knowledge and experience to share. And I, for one, love watching his shows.

The knife is an Alan Wood knife, a Woodlore. It was designed with Ray Mears as an ideal Bushcraft knife. Unfortunately, they are quite expensive and rare, with a long wait time. There are many makers crafting similar patterns, however. A truly beautiful and practical design.

The knife is a Ray mears Woodlore knife. It's a scandi type bushcraft knife. It's a good knife but priced for collectors around 450 english pounds. If you're looking for an affordable simular knife made of the same steel and hardness, go for the Enzo trapper in O1 steel.

Bring a good leather belt and strap your blade on it if you see that the edge has begun to roll (light catches on the edge). It's easy and can help keep an edge for a long time. Do it on a sturdy and flat surface to not convex your blade edge.

Yea I agree. I think I only watched dual survival once or twice (don't watch much TV at all) so I mainly know Dave through his youtube channel. The show felt like pure 'entertainment' to me and poorly done at that. I have looked up Cody on youtube though since then and when not doing the mainstream crap both have alot to offer. Diggin Ray though as well, recently found his channel.

...sharpening it “wrong...” - love these kind of comments about activities that are, in the end, based on the best practices that work for an individual. Got a set of practices that create the result you want for your gear? Awesome! Not the same as Mears’s? Or some other You Tube presenter? Awesome! That make them “wrong?” Not hardly, partner. Not hardly. Every presenter’s tips are nothing but grist for your own mill, and that said - and of course you’re free to disagree - “right” and “wrong “ just plain don’t apply. Just a thought.

It's a 300 dollar knife, also if it's dented to shit your going to have to take a lot more time to hone it back, using files or a diamond sharpener because you'd mess your stones up otherwise.

A tool that can mean the difference between survival and death requires such attention. In fact, anyone who is serious about their tools, regardless of their use will be similarly obsessive about them. My blades do not get nearly as much attention unless I'm headed out. Then I invest the time to make sure even my axe or tomahawk is shaving sharp. I never seem to get that mirror edge though. I probably need to invest in a 6,000 grit water stone. I've been satisfied with 1,200 grit and get a great edge with it.

@iulianmuresanu
@iulianmuresanu 10 жыл бұрын
No! things are just things and to survive you don't need your knife to be sharp enough to shave. A friend can help you more to survive than a slightly sharper knife! Tendencies can be seen in excesses, that's why I said he was an a-hole but I don't really dislike him! And as I remember I didn't dislike the vid either!

Stop shouting, please. And you're wrong: bad company and bad friends can get you KILLED. Moreover, you are distorting Mears' comments: he was talking about the *complete* destruction of a knife through careless use, not about minor dulling. I stand by what I said.
