John Lennon once said if a song is good you can slow it down or speed it up it will always be good. This song proves Lennon's case in that Ray Stevens took a romantic Johnny Mathis hit and turned into a up tempo country hit, a masterpiece.

I dont know anything about this guy, I dont even like country, but I've heard and listened to a lot of music in my life, and this is one of the best performances I've heard anywhere, hes simply amazing in this

juan altredo you know the story, right? This was an old slow love song. He was recording in his studio and told his musicians the song was always performed at the wrong tempo, it should be speeded up. He wrote the arrangement in a few minutes, and won a Grammy for it.

the banjo addition is genius, and he sings it with such joy, its infectious, makes you love life

Juan you are right. The banjo plucking got me. The whole song is just so poetic and sung well by Stevens. I remember when he got prostrate cancer and he said it was no big deal. I am not a man but it would have been a big deal to me! Just shows his courage. So glad he recovered.

fellow is legend. He's a great singer, songwriter, and funny as can be. While he wrote many a novelty hit on Top 40 Radio, he had several songs that are amazing and not novelty. Listen to Everything Is Beautiful, and it will move you. It's mid tempo, and uplifting, and he is just the best. This song got him a Grammy, and is the best version of this standard.

Well I remember Ray when he started out in the late 50's and had most of his greatest records during the 60's & 70's. One of the greatest artists still recording. That's for SEVEN decades now.

I'm a big fan of Ray's. As others have mentioned he's still recording and performing. He opened up a brand new venue a couple of months ago called The CabaRay. It's on River Road in West Nashville, TN. Those familiar with that area it's in a suburb of Nashville, a community called Bellevue. I attended a concert there back on March 1st. It's a fabulous venue/showroom. He also hosts a locally syndicated television show on PBS stations called 'Ray Stevens CabaRay Nashville'.
