That vizualisation is absolute genius. There is no better way of showing the rasterization process to people than this animation. I'm a graphics engineer and I guarantee every word in there is truenews. Absolutely correct. Witted is mentioned as the cornerstone person to revolutionize ray tracing in 1980; I shall complete the information by saying that the path-tracing method is by James Kajiya, in 1986. peace.

Best explaining video I have ever seen. I have been confusued about so-called the terms like ray tracing and path tracing and want to know the exactly relations between the principles and the actual visual effects shown in render engines. You clearly explain them and even present it by using 3d samples. This is amazing. Thanks Andrey, now I become your big fan!
@nathangamble1256 жыл бұрын
Historically, raycasting didn't use an array of millions of rays, it only used one for each horizontal pixel, and textures were stored as vertical lines, which were stretched depending on their distance from the "camera". In DOOM, there was also a height map which determined how high up the screen the textures would be drawn. This is why you cannot look up or down in DOOM or Wolfenstein 3D, but it allowed early 3D games to be made and was much easier than early rasterisation techniques.

From what I know, a UV map is the exact same polygons you have in your mesh .. but in a 2D flat arrangement (hence U and V coordinates opposed to X, Y and Z). Of course this will always stretch/contort your polygons, since you can not properly display a 3D mesh flattened down to 2D (like topographic maps of the world). The trick is to select a projection method that works for you (from the top, "smart" etc). You can also manage it manually to move whatever vertices to your liking. You can usually also tell the 3D program to break up the 3D mesh at specific "seams" so you can more smartly get the 3D mesh into a 2d display (imagine cutting up a 3D model of a microphone with scissors, cutting off the cylinder below, then cutting up the sphere above along a proper line etc ... this helps the UV automatism to create nicely arranged 2D meshes of your 3D mesh. And finally, a 3D program will allow you to manage the texture of your material across the UV map, so you can decide where you put what image detail onto your mesh. In short: Imagine meshed kitchen sieve, your 3D mesh. Smash it with your fist into a flat thing without any overlaps, that's your UV map :)

Wow you went quite in depth. My biggest eureka moment as a VFX artist trying to understand rendering was discovering all the many types of distributed effects there are. Instead of you camera being a single point in space, you randomly distribute the rays you cast across the area of the lens, thus bokeh. Or distribute them across time for motion blur, or around the reflection or refraction angle for roughness, or all around in a hemisphere above the shading point for indirect lighting (global illumination). Or of course, across the area of a light for soft shadows like you mentioned. I fuckin love modern renderers.
@Mac_Daffy6 жыл бұрын
