Ritwik Ghatak was heavily inspired by Eisenstein and early soviet cinema... Ritwik Ghatak was a great story teller, watch 'Subarnarekha'... Ray was a great technician...study the editing and camerawork of Charulata and Aranyer Din Ratri. He was also one of the pioneers to master the use of freeze shot and jump cut in Indian Cinema..... Ritwik Ghatak used to bd bashed by many leftists for a long time for his belief in 'mother cult'. He had issues with many aspects of Marxism... আমার মতে এই এপিসোডটা তোমার চ্যানেলের বেস্ট ভিডিও। তোমার কেন, বাংলা তে অন্য কোন ইউটিউবার এরকম আলোচনামূলক ভিডিও বানায় কি না, আমার জানা নেই। সেদিক থেকে Cinema Beyond Entertainment একমাত্র ভারতীয় চ্যানেল যেটা সিনেমাকে শুধু রিভিউ করে না, সিনেমাকে নিয়ে আলোচনা করে। আর বাকি সব রিভিউ চ্যানেলে শুধু ভুল ধরা, রোস্ট করা...। ভুল ধরা অবশ্যই দরকার। পাবলিকের জানা উচিত। কিন্তু আমাদের মতো সাধারন মানুষের সিনেমাটিক সেন্স তখনই আসবে যখন সেটা নিয়ে আলোচনা হবে, গঠনমূলক আলোচনা। সিনেমার প্রতিটা দিক অ্যানালেসিস হবে। একজন সিনেমাপ্রেমী হিসেবে এরকম আরো আলোচনামূলক ভিডিও ভবিষ্যতে পাবো আশা রাখছি।

I respect both and I saw the maximum no of films of both Like Satyajit's- Apu's trilogy (naam Gulo alada kore r bollm naa), all three parts of Goopy and Bagha, Satranj ke khelari, Ghare Baire, jalsa ghar, mahapurus, porosh pathor, nayak, Devi, aranye dinratri, feluda series films, chiriyakhana, gonosotru, aguntuk, shimabaddha..... And Ritwik's - Megha Dhaka Tara, Subarnarekha, Nagorik(citizen), Jukti Tokko r Goppo, Bari theke paliye, komal gandhar..... Both of them are absolutely amazing.....

তোমার সাথে একদমই একমত এ বিষয়ে। আমার ও সত্যজিৎ রায়ের বেশিরভাগ ছবিই দেখা।ঋত্বিক ঘটকের হয়তো অনেক ছবিই দেখা হয়নি।কিন্তু যেটুকু যা দেখেছি ও তা থেকে ওনার টাইপ সম্পর্কে যেটুকু ধারণা হয়েছে তার ভিত্তিতে আমারও তোমার মতই সত্যজিৎ রায়কেই বেশি ভালো লেগেছে এবং এক্ষেত্রে কারণটাও ঠিক তুমি যেটা বললে সেটাই, তাঁর অসাধারণ গল্প বলার ধরন!❤️ আর হ্যাঁ, এটা ভীষন সত্যি কথা, সত্যজিৎ রায়ের ছবি সম্পর্কে সত্যিকারের ধারণা পেতে হলে তাঁর " ক্যালকাটা ট্রিলজি" (প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী, সীমাবদ্ধ,জন অরণ্য) দেখতেই হবে যেটা আমার ওনার "অপু ট্রিলজির" থেকেও ভালো লেগেছে!

I have watched all the films and documentaries of Ritwik Ghatak and Satyajit Ray.When I did not see a single film of Ritwik Ghatak and saw a good number of Ray films,I thought Ray was the better , but when I watched all the films of both the directors , my opinion and appreciation about them changed a lot. Ritwik babu did not get the proper financial support ,proper requisite cinematic gadgets and the money to visit the foreign countries to watch the world cinemas. Ray got these support abundantly. I have read somewher Ray watched The By-cycle Thief more than 100 times before making his first film. Ray is mostly for the class and not for the mass but Ghatak is,and will remain in future , for the class and the mass.I find the pangs and privations of the hoi polloi much more in Ghatak which haunt my mind painfully. Ghatak did not give attention to media,that is why he did not get much limelight to the cinema-lovers.Ghatak suffered frustrations,but Ray had no such frustrations. For some unknown reasons Ghatak's films were not allowed to release in cinema halls,not to speak of,in famous film festivals. Ghatak's 8 films are gems of Indian cinema.Some of the Ray films are undoutedly hallmarks of his rare multi-dimentional genious.I still remember respectfully Ray's documentary on Tagore.In conclusion,Ghatak's 8 films move me very much. Much remains to be said about them.I am not a film critic,simply a humble film-watcher. Lastly,your analysis about the duo is appreciable.I request you to watch Suroma Ghatak's interview on Ritwik and Nobarun Bhattacharya's interview on Ghatak(available in KZbin).Thanks.

My opinion, for what it is worth, is Rai had an eye for aesthetic presentations, Ghatwak did not. By that metric alone, I love Rai's work far more than Ghatwak's. To me, cinema has to please at least some of the various sense, I possess. Even an extremely uncomfortable film like Mother was visually beautiful and had a hook, that kept me rooted to the seat. To me that hook is very important.

First time I gave a "dislike" to your video. You should not have made a video on legends with a comparing tone. I have seen all of their films at least 5 times so I can humbly comment on this. First of all Satyajit Ray was a torch bearer of an illustrious family and his upbringing occurred in a completely different environment. He was as artistic person well read and well exposed to vibrant Bengali culture and that made him true intellectuals. He had access to modern cinema and when Renoir came to make a movie he was exposed to modern film making. Though he struggled to make his first movie but he got help from Bush an Chandra Roy to Kishore Kumar. And he never looked back. On the opposite side Ghatak had a struggling life and their life had a direct impact on their films. It is totally wrong to think Ray was not a great technicians. He was great technician. His script used to be in picture and angles were all captured. He introduced new way of sound design in Indian cinema. Used varied dimension of lenses and created a new dimension in film music. Even Viswa Bharati allowed him to make changes in Rabindra Sangeet in Charulata. Just check the camera angles on the camel and train scence in Sonar Kella to understand his technical idea. He also created new editing techniques and was master craftsman. Watch Mahanagar to understand how to play with sound. Whenever the husband and wife are alone in bedroom their privacy was invaded by neighbour's radio and it was tremendous sound design and unbelievable how he conceived and executed that in that point of time. Satyajit Ray was an diversified artist. And he was so good writer in her own way it was very easy for him to create sciences. Of course Satyajit Ray was left leaning. He voiced his anger subtly in many movies like Hirak Rajar Deshey Pratidandhi etc. He also gave many new actors in Indian cinema starting with Soumitra Sharmila Subhendu Dipankar De Barun Chandra and end with Victor and Swatilekha. Also listen to the tired voice of Manoj Mitra in Ghare Baire when Victor dies. This voice is heard only in village people and Manoj Mitra was extremely surprised when Ray suggested him the voice. Ghatak created a new dimension in World cinema. He is most probably the only stalwart director who used melodrama to express his voice. His expressions are melodramatic at the same time believable. And that is the hallmark of his expression. "Dada amioto banchtey chaichilam" was an extremely melodramatic expression but that expression took the cinema to other level. Ghatak's personal emotion was expressed many times in his cinema where Ray was extremely careful of bringing his personal view to his cinema and never created a character in white or black in his more serious cinema. In Bari Theke Paliye Ghatak created a different angle from a little boy's perspective and it was unique before it used and hailed as brilliant all over the world. Even today in NY Film school this camera angle in taught in depth. I totally disagree Ray did not created any film director. Dinen Gupta Aravindo Mukherjee to Sandip Ray assisted him in different phase. Even Tinu Anand Shyam Benegal were his assistants. And he had created many cinematographers to sound recordists to editors. Ray and Ghatak came from different background and made different films in different circumstances. Their personal environment was different perspective were different world view were different. And it is really not fair to compare them. Ray had world audience for his film had excellent communication with the foreign media and directors and many well known foreign directors were his personal friends. Ghatak had problem releasing his film in Bengal. Not a single film of him was shown to any major film festival but his expression is so powerful world hailed his cinemas with the respect those cinemas deserve. And want to end at one point. Film making is constantly improving with new technology. The way story was told 50 years back it has changed significantly today. I was watching a French film Knife+Heart yesterday. A mind boggling New expression to a noir film. And you never know when a Ghatak or a Ray come knocking to Bengali cinema. May be tomorrow Aditya Vikram or Kaushik or even Srijit (if he can stop thinking himself a great director) can give us a cinema when 30 years after their death somebody like me can write this. But please do not try to even put them side by side.
