I been beat up worse than this by bikers is by far THEE best punch line I ever heard. The way Jerry Jeff busted a gut laughing makes me wish I could hear that entire story all over again for the first time!

I really wish I had a time machine. I'd go back to that early 70's scene around Austin and soak it in.

I was there. I'm 67 now. I did a lot of sound work and sound checks etc. So I'm no star but I have stories about them. Jerry Jeff included. What a time.

I agree on a lot of levels. but if we were all back in Austin in 1986, not all of us could say that we were at Farm Aid 2! Manor Downs was at max capacity at 40,000! Nothing like 2 - 15 yr old kids carrying in 4 milk jugs full of beer! True story, i have the carton and pics for proof. Long Live RWH, Willie, Merle, Johnny, Kris, and to the 50 others that performed that day! i can always say i saw the greatful dead, john prine, Jessie Jackson, and Stevie Ray Vaughn in the same day! - Long live the 80's and the good times that were had! - LEG

I would go with you. Austin saved country music. Losing Jerry Jeff, Billy Joe, and now Jimmy Buffett. Makes me remember the few words I spent in Austin in the seventies. The greatest collection of musicians ever. I finally had to leave. Going ever night listening to music. Mixed with gallons of Jim Beam and the best weed. I barely made it home. But, I wouldn't change a damn thing. Ray is coming to Alabama. I'll be there.

I'm loving the RWH stories. I remember the Rubyiat and the tales of the clubs in Dallas-I was too young to visit them b/c I was in Jr High or High School but those venues advertised in the Dallas underground paper "Dallas Notes" that I used to peddle in Jr High for 25 cents. Years later during my Jr or St year in HS, the drinking law had just changed to 18 and the clubs were lax and they accepted my HS photo ID with a changed birthdate (helps to have friends on the yearbook staff. My first nightclub show was Lightin' Hopkins at Mother Blues on Lemmon Ave. RWH has a song about a gold 57 Les Paul called MOther Blues on THe Grifter's Hymnal LP

Dallas had many great live music bars in the mid 70's, but none had the exceptional vibe of Mother Blues.

I'm from Austin but about 10 years after all these guys. I was there in the mid 80s for a little while and then all through the '90s. Charlie Dunn was on Guadeloupe over around 25th Street. I believe that's correct I may have that wrong. It could have been on Congress. It's one of the two.

Hi Otis! Love your stuff! I first discovered you (or so it seemed...) on your "cassette" interviews. That led me to all the rest.... I was thinkin' "where have I heard this guy before?" It finally came to me: I had a radio show for about 10 years, I'm here in wine country, so it was called "Rootstock & Vine: An exploration of the Roots of American Music" (the most powerful cultural force on the planet!)" so, anyway, one day it came to me, that I used to play your albums on my show! Here's a couple of tidbits for you, related to some of your recent interviews: 1. Bob ("Is it rollin' Bob?") Johnston was a friend of mine, and there's a story out there, I think it's from a tape, or an article,,, I don't think I heard it from Bob, but anyway, supposedly, when the FBI arrived at Willie's door, Bob happened to be there. They were going to confiscate Willie's masters, which he was in possession of, and Bob jumps up, and says "these aren't Willie's tapes! They belong to my employer, Columbia Records! And unless you want to be up to your ears in their lawyers, you best keep your hands off 'em!" The upshot was, Willie kept his masters! (which, BTW: were his, and had nothin' to do with Columbia. Just as, as far as I remember, Bob had already left Columbia at that time....! 2. I was livin' with Jerry Jeff at his place on Sullivan St, in the Village (actually I would come across, on a weekend pass from the Army base I was at in New Jersey, and I would crash on Jerry's floor...) So one time I notice he's got a new guitar. So he says he got a call from Guild, or he just went over there (they were in NY at the time..). He's in the CEO's office, and the guy asks him if he's the guy that wrote Mr Bo Jangles. Jerry says yup, and the guy says he can have any guitar in the factory. So Jerry notices a Rosewood F50 sittin' there, and he says; "How 'bout this one?" The guy says, well, we made that one specially for Donovan, but, what the hell, it's yours! So, either they made him another one later, or Donovan dodged a bullet!
