I compete at 30 lbs and I had test hit an old chassis out in the middle of nowhere and it ripped a bolt head off and went straight through a 1/2 inch peice of plywood 25 yards away. Now just imagine tombstone removing a 20lb chunk of steel and sending it at the same speed. Hi Ray Didn't the AR bar in got bent Last Rites? If I recall correctly that bar has the same thickness as these bars, if that bar got bent at 120lbs, wouldn't the same thickness with a longer bar make it more susceptible to bend? Also, it will be going against weapons with a higher KE (250lb)... Bar bending in big horizontals is a very common failure in smaller weight classes, maybe the KE in heavyweights have reached a point where it can achieve the same failure mode...
@ray9368 Жыл бұрын
I've never ran an AR bar on Last Rites. I have on other bots though, like Mortician and Perfect Phoenix. And the fact that it will bend rather than snap is really a strength for it rather than a weakness. The only one that I have seen bent to any real degree was on Perfect Phoenix, but in that case it was kind of a perfect storm to make it happen. We'll continue to pursue various alloys and hardening recipes to come up with options that can work.

@ray9368 Жыл бұрын
The bar never bent, and we still used it later at that event and again at BattleBots for proving grounds fights against Doom. In fact, I will still use those bars again on Mortician next year whenever I rebuild it. The frame however did take some damage, which allowed the weapon to not be correctly aligned through the frame while spinning. This btw is fairly common with the offset spinner design, since all of that framing does flex quite a bit in fights. Also, the weapons for Mortician are significantly thinner than the ones used for Tombstone. Everything is scaled up between the two weight classes.

The modified ME0708 that you use to power the weapon on Tombstone do you feel in todays world of brushless motors it still has a place ?
@ray9368 Жыл бұрын
Obviously the power level is more than adequate for my needs, and the reliability of the motors has been really good. They are heavy though, and also just physically large, which dictates how large the frame has to be to accommodate it. Is there still a place for it? Absolutely. Will I always continue to use it? Great question, that I simply don't have an answer for right now. I do plan on continuing brushless development going forward, so if the day comes that I think it will be a better choice I have no qualms about switching.

There are certainly ideas that could be explored. Fusion’s triangle weapon design is well done, and a bigger version of that could work well. Hi Ray, I enjoy watching your work. I’ve often wondered if you’ve considered using indexable inserts and tool holders at the ends of one of your weapons. I’m referring to the ones used in large shell mills that are found on very large milling machines. I would think these would be only usable on certain type of opponents where you may need to cut into harder armors. I know these things aren’t cheap, but you may be able to find some that are in the recycling bin of a machine shop at a lower cost.
@ray9368 Жыл бұрын
You would think that using equipment that is designed for cutting metal would be ideal, but the reason machining works is due to specific feeds and speeds, and a great deal of math (and trial and error) goes into making sure you get those feeds/speeds correct. Pushing beyond those limits can crash the machine, sometimes catastrophically. And well, in combat we are basically crashing the machine over and over :) Long story short, the inserts you refer to simply shatter at these sorts of forces. It's not a bad idea, and at various times in our sport history people have tried larger machining equipment, and it pretty much always fails.

Do you think adding a rubber "bushing" between the sprocket and the hub would help reduce impact forces into the weapon drivetrain? Motorcycles use them between the chain sprocket and the rear wheel.
@ray9368 Жыл бұрын
I can see for a motorcycle going many thousands of miles that it could help longevity. For combat though, it's kind of a problem that doesn't need fixing honestly. The biggest shock to the weapon power system is when the weapon motor is at full speed, and the weapon comes to an instant stop. The armature inside the motor has enough momentum that it wants to continue to spin even though mechanically everything has stopped, and you get some nasty forces on the motor shaft in the process. A torque limiter on the sprocket there gives enough slip to keep that from being an issue.
@roboman2444 Жыл бұрын
@ray9368 That makes sense. I didn't know you had a mechanism to slip the motor.
@53rdcards Жыл бұрын
Out of curiosity, on the bars that have the teeth, it has always appeared that the milling work on them slots vertically and bolts hold the teeth in place. could you instead mill a slot in the tooth and one in the bar that makes the tooth slot in horizontally, so that the bolts are no longer the sole item taking the hit when it might shear off, but instead its the bar and tooth that are helping?

The shaft and mount setup is much smaller for Mortician, so short of machining up some odd custom adapters, it's pretty much a no. Interestingly though, I did make a custom hub at one point to use an older heavyweight bar on Mortician, and that did work fairly well. It was easier to machine down a bigger bar for a smaller bot than the other way around :)

The benefit of an asymmetric design is increased bite. So for small diameter weapons, spinning at high rpms, the benefits are absolutely worth the effort. As the weapons get longer and bigger, the advantages start to go away. For Tombstone I routinely see strike marks several inches up the edge of the weapon bars, so I'm getting enough bite. I do admit you can make some unique designs that look cool though. And it is a TV show, so looking cool is a valuable trait.
