I sympathize with you. I am well aware that there was the three part episode "The Rebirth", followed by Headmasters which came shortly after. But I tend to ignore Rebirth, and view Headmasters as an alternate continuity. For me, the G1 cartoon ends with season 3.

I personally have a love-hate relationship with the Japanese Transformers series on one hand I love some of the ideas and characters that we got such as Overlord, Star Saber and Deathsaurus but others such as this, Cybertron’s destruction (Making Optimus Prime’s sacrifice here POINTLESS) Galvatron’s defeat and Sixshot becoming a good guy I absolutely HATED.

I don't quite understand how Prime died from this, while Galvatron just stood up and ran away. Galavatron was thrown inside that giant ball of energy while Optimus was standing outside of it to protect his comrades from its blast. How did Galvatron survive being in the centre of that explosion while Prime dies from getting hit by it? If anything, they should have both died.

Yes it's true he survives, maybe due to the fact that Galvatron is newer and maybe stronger. Nevertheless it is ok since Lord Zarak kills him a few episodes later :-)

@GameOmar7261 Truth is the death scene showed forgiveness in the face of the absolutely unforgiveable. Well, and Optimus again at his most awesome, no surprise. Anyway, Rodimus is pretty good, but the movie itself is a story of maturity and growing up, so it's to be expected. Also, Rodimus still spent the majority of a season beating himself up for not having done better, not living up to his potential (supposedly) and wishing Optimus were there, so despite being "mature," he was still very "immature" probably from having grown up to fast and having accepted his new role too soon.

That's where my confusion with Masterforce comes in. Even though it's not a true reboot, i read that it kind of ignores the previous shows and plays it like the Autobots and Decepticons are unknown to Earth. Is that accurate, Ray? Masterforce's version of the Pretenders sounds a lot more logical to me though. The US version of the Pretenders, which was Transformers disguising themselves as giant humans (or humanoids), doesn't sound like a way to keep a low profile...

Oh, and, as for General Hawk, he appeared in his 1991 flight outfit in season 1 of the DiC G.I. Joe cartoon. I'm aware 1987 characters we *did* see, in the G.I. Joe cartoon, are 'the Rawhides' (Chuckles, Falcon, Jinx, Law and Tunnel Rat) [*this* version of Tunnel Rat]. I don't know if we'd have seen Big Lob again, had there been the third season after the movie (though I'd say, had Sylvester Stallone not minded Hasbro using his likeness for the Joe member 'Rocky Balboa', *he'd* definitely have appeared in the cartoon). We'd definitely be seeing the *other* batch of 1987 carded Joes - Crazylegs, Fast Draw and the new 'Marine dress blues' version of Gung-Ho, had there been the third season after the movie, and two of the last Cobra individuals - Big Boa and Crystal Ball. I don't know if we'd still see the Cobra La characters - the Royal Guards and the two individuals - Nemesis Enforcer and Golobulus (especially Pythona and the bald Cobra La citizens).

How did Cyclonus and Scourge beat Optimus to Vector Sigma despite being engaged in the fight with Rodimus, Jazz and the Dinobots outside the computer base? How did they get there without facing any of the defences Optimus had to fight?

Optimus Prime’s death may not sit well with fans after seeing their hero revived just for 3 episodes in this series but his sacrifice was his own choice. Rodimus wanted to return the Matrix back to Prime but as Vector Sigma instability flares up, something needs to be done. Rodimus wanted to use the Martix to suppress the Oracle but Prime thinking ahead and knowing how important the Matrix is to the Autobots future cause, does not want the power of the talisman to be wasted and knowing Prime well, he isn’t the one who will allow Rodimus or his own people to sacrifice themselves. So he made that bold decision to use his own life essence with the assurance and trusting Rodimus to continue his work when he’s no longer around

In Japan, they never got the movie and also did not count our season 4 (which sucked) so they continued with Headmasters, then Super God Master Force, then ending with Victory. They get really good after Headmasters ;-)

America only really got 3 Seasons then a 3 Part Special in addition to the movie for Gen 1. Japan still got the movie, they just got Season 3 before it & changed the year to 2010 instead of 2006. HeadMasters was Season 4, MasterForce was Season 5, then Victory was Season 6. Then Transformers was dead for a few years only to be revived by Beast Wars, Japan would create Beast Wars II & Beast Wars Neo to buy time for the 2nd half of Beast Wars to get dubbed there. Then they created Car Robots & showed that instead of Beast Machines, which they would get dubbed later as "Beast Wars Returns".

To watch the Japanese Headmasters all you need to do is disregard the American Headmasters which was called "Rebirth", then you should be able to flow right in from season 3 :-)

I keep thinking of *more* stuff to post here, once I post a comment - I'm aware all versions of Snake Eyes never *did* speak, in either the 80s Sunbow or 90s DiC G.I. Joe cartoons, but his 1989 outfit was animated only for commercials. Possibly, had we had the continued, planned, third season of the original 80s Sunbow G.I. Joe cartoon, post-movie, we'd have seen the new Iron Grenadiers leader version of Destro (the only member of the Iron Grenadiers who wasn't a new character); we'd definitely see animated appearances from all six of the 1987 Battle Force 2000 members - Avalanche, Blaster, Blocker, Dodger, Knockdown and Maverick, and the two 1988 Iron Grenadiers drivers - the Ferrets and Nullifiers. My theory as to why most of the 1989 characters never got too much character development and screen time could possibly be why the two 1989 Iron Grenadiers drivers - Darklon and the Wild Boars - were animated only for commercials. The Dreadnok Gnawgahyde (the last member of the Dreadnoks) is one of the few carded 1989 characters to appear in more than one episode of the new 90s DiC post-movie G.I. Joe cartoon, and have lots of speaking roles. In addition, had we had the third season, after the G.I. Joe movie, I don't know if we'd have seen more of the Renegades - Mercer, Red Dog and Taurus, but other 1987 characters we'd *definitely* have seen, in animation, are two Cobra drivers - the Sea Slugs and the Dreadnok Zanzibar.

I grew up watching Transformers as a kid and loved it...I remember i always felt sad and got teary when i used to watch Dark Awakening. I had actually never seen this episode featured in this video... shame its in Japanese and dubbed. So to clarify... His first death would be The Movie... (which kinda felt like it ruined my childhood at the time) i remember i read that it made so many kids upset, that they had to bring him back to life in G2. So Dark awakening (which, if you come to think of it... its an actual a pretty dark cartoon for kids)... he was bought back by Quintesons... and then dead again by crashing in the Supernova... .But then he was bought back once again... I remember by some human scientists, apparently pulled him out before he crashed into the asteroid (which isnt possible considering how many guns was shooting at his ship before the crash). So thats his second death... and then this is the third?

Read on and you'll see why I say it's not a real death :-) Season 3 "Dark Awakening" Optimus Prime returns from the grave to lead the Autobots once again. Upon seeing his mentor again, Rodimus Prime returns the Matrix of Leadership to Optimus, reverting to carefree Hot Rod once again. But things turn ugly when it becomes clear that this is not the same Optimus Prime they once knew. He has been secretly reprogrammed to lead every Autobot into a deadly trap. Eventually, the Autobots will discover who brought Optimus back to life and why.

The whole killing off Prime again so quickly ruined the series. It was the dumbest thing ever done in any anime history. I’ll choose Rebirth way before this sad Headmasters series. Master force and Victory were good on the other hand but still should be considered an alternate timeline. Headmasters shouldn’t exist at all.

the reason they killed prime (to us seemed again) was actually due to Japan not getting the movie till much later on. Japan killed Prime in Headmasters not ever knowing that we had made the Movie and killed Prime in America. This was literally Japan doing the same thing we did in killing all the G1 characters in thew Movie, they thought they needed to kill them to make their new Transformers ;-)

Good thing this was in the *Japanese* continuity of the show; let's pray, had the original 80s Sunbow G1 cartoon continued in the States (and North America), after part 3 of 'Headmasters' (aka 'The Rebirth') [and, not counting said episode being a three parter, was the *only* season 4 post-movie episode, hence we would have gotten *more* season 4 episodes after part 3 of said episode], this would never have happened. I'd like to think that, *owing to* how the show ended after part 3 of said episode, things became *anarchised*, like Optimus Prime dying again. Characters we would have seen, had we gotten more episodes after part 3 of said episode, are ones like (one of the *new* Decepticon Targetmasters) Quake, (one of the Decepticon Triggercons) Crankcase and (one of the Decepticon Pretender Beasts) Snarler; we especially would have gotten the continued (it was even *planned* to have been made by this point) third season of the 80s Sunbow G.I. Joe cartoon, after the movie (I'm aware we did get the new DiC cartoon, after the movie, in the 90s, but still). Characters we were to have seen, in the new third season of the original 80s Sunbow G.I. Joe cartoon, after the movie, are those from 1987 and 1988 (this could be why, in the five parter episode 'Operation: Dragonfire', which was the very first episode of the new DiC cartoon, after the G.I. Joe movie, either some of the 1989 Joes and Cobras be 'animated only for commercials', or, most of all, why most of the 1989 Joes and Cobras only appear in 'Operation: Dragonfire', and especially only make brief, silent appearances) [and why some of the 1989 characters - like Countdown and Dogfight - were never animated *period*]. This could be why Deep-Six's 1989 outfit was never in any animation (even commercials). Other Cobra troops, who only appear in 'Operation: Dragonfire', and never speak, are the Night-Vipers and Annihilators (again, my theory could be owing to the cancellation of the third season after the movie). I'm aware Cobra Commander's late 1991 outfit (wearing a gold helmet and red faceplate, and dark blue uniform, and has a more 'Imperial' look) was never animated *period* (possibly owing to the animators having to use his 1987 armoured outfit in the DiC cartoon, where they planned to use it as his new outfit after the movie, in the original 80s Sunbow cartoon, after he was changed back to being a human from a mutated cobra of Cobra La). It's no surprise the DiC cartoon didn't last too long (hence there were never animated appearances from some of the 1992 characters, and especially any of the characters from 1993 and 1994). I'm well aware of the two parter episode 'The Return of Optimus Prime', which was, as well as the last episode of season 3, the penultimate episode of the original 80s Sunbow G1 Transformers cartoon (in the States and North America). Hence the name, it was his revival after his death in the movie, after the fight he had with Megatron (who he simultaneously injured, hence Unicron changed him into Galvatron) [especially as his revival in the season 3 episode 'Dark Awakening' wasn't in a *good* way]. I'm OK about the Visionaries not having any more than merely 13 episodes (I'd say the episode 'Sorcery Squared' coincided with 'The Return of Optimus Prime', and the episode 'Dawn of the Sun Imps' coincided with 'Headmasters' aka 'The Rebirth'). Virtually the *only* characters who we got to see, in the new DiC G.I. Joe cartoon, are the carded Joes and Cobras from 1990, all six members of 1990's 'Sky Patrol' subset, the 1991 regular carded assortment Joes and Cobras, Cesspool (the leader of Cobra's side of the Eco Warriors), Overkill (the only new character of the 'Talking Battle Commanders' figures), the Super Sonic Fighters version of Major Bludd (in the dark blue and yellow uniform) and the first wave of the Ninja Force characters (from the first wave of the subset, from 1992 - featuring members like TJ'bang, Dojo, Slice and Dice). I'm aware the Night Vultures (Cobra troops from the first wave of the Air Commandos - from 1991) might have appeared, but they never spoke. More so, I'm aware the 1989 versions of Stalker and Rock & Roll might have appeared in the new 90s DiC (post-G.I. Joe movie) cartoon, but the former's only appearance was in 'Operation: Dragonfire', and the same episode was the latter's only speaking role. Said episode was even the only speaking role of the Alley-Vipers (making Scoop the only 1989 regular carded Joe to appear and speak in episodes subsequent to 'Operation: Dragonfire'). I'm aware the 1987 versions of Psyche-Out, Outback and Sneak Peek were to have appeared in the original 80s Sunbow G.I. Joe (post-movie) cartoon, as were the two 1988 Joes - Blizzard and Hit & Run, though it's unknown if the Tiger Force versions (since these versions were only released in the UK, never in the States) of Psyche-Out and Outback would have appeared in animation (especially the Tiger Force versions of Hit & Run, Tunnel Rat, Blizzard and Sneak Peek). I imagine the Tiger Force versions of Lifeline, Roadblock, Duke and Tripwire were to have appeared in the G.I. Joe cartoon after the movie.
