She said in interview she's hugely inspired by Nina Simone, you can hear that influence in the raw emotion of her lyrics and melodies. As you're enjoying the big band and choir accompaniments here, you definitely need to watch her performing at the Royal Albert Hall singing Oscar Winning Tears, she has a full orchestra and choir with her there, its simply spectacular ❤

Thanks for reacting to Raye - love to see her getting the recognition she deserves. My 21st Century Blues was my fave album of 2023 but as hard as her album goes, Raye performing live is just a billion times better. I'd recommend checking out her Tiny Desk concert to hear her stripped back performances of some of the more underrated songs off her album.

I'll second the recommendation for any of her Royal Albert Hall reimagining of the album, and there's definitely a lot of love for Oscar Winning Tears. First time coming across your channel and I love how complimentary you are of the musicality of these talented artists...especially Raye and this performance. I wished there'd been a bit more appreciation of the power and message of Ice-cream Man, as it’s such a powerful account of the sexual exploitation and assault of female artists in the music industry, but appreciate that might be a bit heavy for the tone of your vids.
