Hi, super RAYE fan here. Loved your reaction❤. Well you were right about some songs but it’s definitely not a break up album, “Hard Out here” is about the music industry/ her former label that did her dirty, “Black Mascara” is about someone she trusted spiking her drink, “Mary Jane” is about her addictions (well, painkillers is what she was actually addicted to, she’s clean now), “Ice Cream Man” & “Body Dysmorphia” were self explanatory. “Environmental Anxiety” is about her fears about what’s happening to the planet. .

I love RAYE so much!!! Especially how she translates her studio songs into live. She's also performing on SNL this weekend!! So I really hope she breaks out in the USA too ( she did tour there too). Watch her Tiny Desk performance to really get her personality too, it's so fun!!

So happy you decided to react to this! Definitely one of the best albums to come out during our lifetime in my opinion! I love seeing your perspective seeing the live versions of some songs first and THEN reacting to the studio recording, as most people go in the opposite order. She really is a musical genius in all senses, but ESPECIALLY when it comes to live arrangements and composing!! 💖

In case you aren't yet familiar with her backstory, here's a brief summary: RAYE has been making and releasing music for roughly 10 years now. For the ~7 years leading up to this albums rollout, she was stuck in an abusive record label. The executives would hold the chances for an album over her head, getting her to write songs for other big artists (Beyoncé, Little Mix, and more), features on some of the most popular producer's/DJ's tracks, and her own singles, without ever giving her the payoff of releasing her own album or making music how she wanted. Finally, she was able to break her deal with them, and rather than signing to another label, she went independent. She started to release the singles for this album, and fans from her previous hits started paying more attention. When Escapism hit TikTok, it started to trend and blew up internationally, becoming her highest charting song, longest charting song, and earning her #1 Hit Song in multiple countries!! Lots of these songs cover what she endured while in this record deal. She's been assaulted, taken advantage of, addicted to substances, cheated on, lied to, etc. Now she is the biggest she has ever been, and it's all thanks to her making music the was SHE wants to and the was SHE was meant to all along!

No I didn’t know the full story but I’ve heard her name before for years but only seen her on features and then she would disappear, but I knew she was a writer, I just learned she wrote a song for Bey’s Cowboy Carter. But I’m so glad she finally getting her flowers 💐 🙌🏾because THAT IS NATURAL TALENT!
