Based on Elmore Leonard’s novella “Fire in the Hole,” Justified was developed by Graham Yost and stars Timothy Olyphant as Deputy US Marshal Raylan Givens, a lawman who finds himself drawn back to his home state of Kentucky. In Justified’s final season, the long brimming conflict between Raylan and Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) will finally come to a head. The series co-stars Walton Goggins as ‘Boyd Crowder;’ Nick Searcy as ‘Chief Deputy Art Mullen;’ Jacob Pitts as ‘Deputy Marshal Tim Gutterson;’ Erica Tazel as ‘Deputy Marshal Rachel Brooks;’ Joelle Carter as ‘Ava Crowder;’ and Jere Burns as ‘Wynn Duffy.’ Yost wrote the pilot and serves as Executive Producer/Writer on the series. Executive Producers on the series include Carl Beverly, Sarah Timberman, Michael Dinner, Fred Golan, Dave Andron, Don Kurt, Taylor Elmore, Timothy Olyphant, and the late Elmore Leonard. Justified is produced by Sony Pictures Television and FX Productions.

What a scene. The "we dug coal together" line had been used a few times in the series, but this is when the full meaning hit home for me. This scene validated everything that came before. Perfect.

Absolutely. It closed the loop and confirmed the thing that we all felt from the very first occasions that both Raylan and Boyd said it. "We dug coal together," is as close to "You're my brother for life," as they can muster. What a scene, and what a show!

"That the only reason? After all these long years, Raylan Givens, that's the only reason?" With Ava's death, Boyd is faced with the reality that Raylan is all the family he has left in the world. And as he has done repeatedly throughout the series, he asks Raylan for validation - some indication that he matters to him. Raylan struggles with emotional expression in general, but his obvious brotherhood with Boyd is something he can't consciously accept or openly admit. How can he love as a brother, a man who so reminds him of Arlo? This show was Blue Grass Shakespeare, and I don't think anything else will ever come close.

It really was. So much credit goes to the writers and actors for this outstanding series. I read Fire in The Hole, the short story on which the show was based. Excellent, but it was very short and just the jumping off point for all that was to come. I must say, even in that short format the depth and complexity if the relationship between Raylan and Boyd was all there. It ended with the exact words "we dug coal together", but from Raylan, not Boyd. Definitely recommended if you haven't read it already.

I don’t live in Eastern Kentucky, but as a lifelong resident from a multigenerational family in Kentucky I know the importance of coal to our state. And I know about the years of backbreaking labor and hard times of coal miners, and years of economic hardships of coal mining towns. I was thrilled that JUSTIFIED was set in Harlan, and (besides drug trade) mining was prominent in the story’s history. When Raylan and Boyd sat across from each other I knew in my heart that their joint past was going to be part of whatever they said. When Boyd said it I was in tears. Walton Goggins was so amazing in his portrayal of Boyd. “We dug coal together.” “That’s right.” Perfect ending to it all.

I just hope that no one sees this clip, before they have seen ALL episodes that preceded this ! Very well said Jeff --- my take was nearly the same as yours, only that Boyd knew or would figure out Raylan was lying about Ava, while also realizing WHY he had told him that. To protect, if possible, both Ava and Boyd. As you said he loved and understood them both. My reasoning - both Raylan and Boyd always deep down knew each others intentions, motivations and next move.

Such a great show. I was raised in southwest Virginia/eastern Kentucky and that part of the country is rarely depicted as accurately as in Justified. It’s easy to just roll with stereotypes-barefoot inbred hillbillies. In reality, life is complicated there. And the people are far more intelligent than expected. Similar to a Brooklyn kid who isn’t very educated, but has genius level street smarts. Also, the poetic flow of southern language, even between opponents, forces you to think through the dialogue and consider underlying motives.

I live in Ohio, but have a lot of family in KY, and "we dug coal together" is one of the closest things a civilian will get to military brotherhood I think. That bond still holds with 70-80 year old men. I wish my friends were half as loyal.

I first saw "Boyd" in a tv series called "The Shield". If you like Walter Groggins as an actor, I would highly recommend giving "The Shield" a watch. He is also going to be in the new Fallout series that has not yet aired but should be out later this year. He has been in a bunch of other movies/series and he always plays a great role. He is often the villain that you hate to love.

Why did it take the release of this new limited series for y’all’s to finally release official clips this show? Epic scene though. “We dug coal together.” is one of the greatest lines ever.

"best" probably stretches things.. raylan also protected ava and her son by telling boyd they were dead, with enough proof to who counted to make sure that nobody would think to find them. though knowing how well boyd knew him. it may be that the character figured that.

"We dug coal together." That summed the whole series up, quite well. A job that was Dangerous, Difficult, and Dirty! It's the one thing that created the bond between them, that would last forever. Just ask anyone who has ever done it. What a great series!

Despite all the things that happened as a result of the two of them going in different directions in their respective lives, it ultimately came back to this....."we dug coal together." What a 'circle of life' phrase. Brilliant writing.

My long dead old time Father dug coal in a slope mine, usually with a pick, on his knees cutting out a 30" or less vien of coal. He later became a Pin Man, bolting supports into rock ceilings and timbers. You trusted those people with your life, every day!

I feel like only people from the Kentucky/West Virginia area can truly and fully appreciate this scene. Digging coal is one of the most dangerous jobs there is. And everyone (at least in WV) has someone they care about, family of friend, who’s dug coal. A lot of those miners have had a run-in that’s left them injured or scarred. Digging coal with someone is on par with being in a foxhole with someone during war. You put your lives in each other’s hands. To a degree, it creates a bond that supersedes everything else.

The beauty of this scene is that the only reason Boyd believes Raylan is because they dug coal together. In Boyd's mind, this creates a bond between them that, underneath all the baggage, is unbreakable. It is because of this that Raylan, who throughout the series is very straightforward in his motives and actions, is able to "pull a Boyd" and be manipulative. The thing is, that Raylan almost certainly feels the same bond, because after all, they dug coal together.

The way Walton Goggings says "We dug coal together" is marvelous acting. He expressed so much in just 4 words. Friendship, history, bond and love between two people which was shared between two people not because of their previous profession but their whole childhood.
