The "oh no we can't stop her in time" is bullshit. In the manga that line does not exist and you can clearly see that the SH were preparing and aren't super concerned, they would have stopped her in time, it's just that Rayleigh got there first. It's once again a line added for dramatic purpose that's unbelievably stupid considering not only are Usopp and Zoro prepared to attack at range and not particularly concerned but Robin is there and her speed is basically instantaneous regadless of range (and in the manga she is in fact shown preparing herself to take the Celestial Dragon girl down). Same thing with Franky finding the key although they didn't change that in the anime at least, the SH would have saved her with no issue. Rayleigh was in fact selective, otherwise some of the SH would have at least felt faint like some of the members of the other pirate crews, that's why Rayleigh apologised to Kidd and Law, if he'd known they were pirate he wouldn't have targeted them. Law and Kidd's crew didn't faint but they definitely felt it, the SH probably wouldn't have either, but some would definitely have gotten dizzy.

Regarding the discussion about feeling the big moments more at this point in the story, speaking for myself and i assume a lot of older viewers: we read or watched these moments when we were younger and a little more excitable, so the first watch was different. After that we came back and saw these moments with the added context of further story development and world building, so we gained even more appreciation. So the early arcs are great, but they also get enhanced by context and your personal state of mind :)

One cool fact about Rayleigh Shanks and Buggy is that during the flashback of Buggy getting his fruit they are seen in their pirate ship. At the time it is likely that Oda didn't connect Shanks and Buggy to Roger yet so the only character that we see there was Rayleigh young (without white hair). His character design did change quite a bit but you can recognize him (it's episode 8, the guy who hit Shanks and Buggy to stop them from fighting).

Oda said in an SBS he told the animation team for the anime to make sure no-one called the guy "captain", so he must have known something at the time. The anime then proceeded to mess Rayleigh's design up though, so they clearly weren't listening too hard (in the manga there isn't much of a change, he looks practically the same).

About 'standards' - I think it's just that people take different amounts of time to adjust to what One Piece is as a story. The 'hyper-critical' types take more, because their expectations are more deeply engrained. Once you realize the creative license Oda takes; his primary themes, worldbuilding and character traits, you learn to release the expectations you might have of other shows. And accept One Piece for what it is; a completely unique piece of fiction in a world of copy-cats. To me, it's all about fun, friendship and freedom.

There's a difference between Navy HQ and "Land of the Gods" Marijoa. Navy HQ in in the Tub Current with Enis Lobby and Impel Down. Examples so far: Where Garp took Koby/Helmeppo, where most conversations with Sengoku/Garp/the Admirals happen. Marijoa is the one on top of the Red Line. Examples so far: the Five Elder's conversation, Sengoku's meeting with the Warlords, Cobra/Vivi's meeting with Wapol and other Kings, where the Celestial Dragons come from. Sabaody is close to both Navy HQ and Marijoa. The Tub current is quite big actually. I think one of the "sides" of the Florian triangle is probably just the Tub current. But also remember they had to use the Sea Train to get to Enis Lobby, it's not *that* close to Water Seven.

I thought I had “higher standards” than most people too, 15:44 But One Piece TV came out in ‘99 & I only saw it in 2020 w/c meant I didn't have the hq vision & openness to creativity I thought I had for exploring stories. But the genius creator of Slam Dunk *read* ch. 1 of One Piece in 1997 & said that it's the only manga in that year that caught his attention because the author had vision & great potential. This means REALLY special people like Inoue-sensei can detect GREAT series at its infant stage... While people like us who think we have “higher” standards in stories, needed clout and trends to see the vision of One Piece. 😅😅😅 For context I'm a fan (childhood) of HxH, Fullmetal Alchemist, YYH, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Vandread, Berserk, Slam Dunk, Eva, Parasyte, Claymore, etc, & loved *newer animes* like Naruto 2004, Death Note, Code Geass, Bleach.. and enjoy “newest ones” like AOT, JJK, OPM, etc. not counting manga like Black Butler, Haikyuu etc, so I know I really have high standards.. imagine OG ONE PIECE FANS, from 1999... Those people really had the spirit of freedom to explore unchartered territory, while I was watching Ippo or HxH (I saw these in 2003?), they stuck with crazy Luffy and One Piece.

From the first 2-3 episodes I liked Luffy, zoro, coby and I got hooked , my motivation to keep binging had ups and lows at points, but it never occurred to me if I would drop it! IDK if it's about standards. Even though I'm extremely picky too. "I Want to Live" and Going Merry's funeral are still among my top favorite moments from the entire series. That made it my favorite story. But then again, I'd say even you guys were more invested into OP than me, prior to W7. But W7/EL just hit way more for me personally. More than most of the things in any story ever. Different scenes & arcs hit different for different people. Still, soooo much peak to come for you guys. Despite later pacing getting kinda rough in the anime because they almost caught up to the manga.

Loved you guys' discussion mid way through. The thing about One Piece for me is that it definitely has its highs and lows. I wouldn't say the progression of quality is always linear for each arc that passes. However, there is a story that One Piece follows that keeps unfolding as you go on, and while the build up for things may be long at times, I absolutely think the pay off is worth it each time something new is revealed. Sabaody is my favorite arc in the entire show; it's the one that sold me on sticking with the journey to the very end. Like you two, I enjoyed every arc before it for different reasons - I loved the story, but I didn't truly become a OP fan until Sabaody. One Piece has its flaws like every other show - Oda is not perfect - so there are definitely some moments that I do not enjoy. People have already warned you about the anime's pacing in later arcs so I won't get into that. But One Piece's story is enthralling, and the worldbuilding is unrivaled, and it's what gets me so invested. I love OP for other personal reasons, but as someone who's caught up to the manga, I'm more excited than ever for what's to come. Where the *anime* currently is rivals my love for Sabaody (and maybe it'll exceed it if the anime does the rest justice). Every new moment you watch sheds light on things of the past. Hope you guys continue to enjoy the ride!

Personally, I got hooked on the manga fairly early on (pretty much from the beginning, more or less), but that's just me. To answer your question about Ep 398, from 28:46 onwards (in this video) are anime additions that aren't part of the source material. If I must reason on the cheery music usage, I'd say its because Toei wants to end the episode on a cathartic power trip for the viewers, and the music choice would further this.

I think that a lot of people share your experience, really; this is the point where most people really sat up and took notice. It's just that we can look at the earlier arcs with hindsight, and with the knowledge of what lies behind a lot of what is going on. Also, quite honestly, the anime drags down the story at several points and for manga readers that's not an issue. The story from now on will continue to get better, but the anime, sadly, will get significantly worse. And it will get worse in all the little ways that it is already failing, so what will happen is a sort of boiled frog effect where you feel more and more tedium as you watch and a lot more annoyance with the characters withouth quite being able to put your finger on exactly why. The highs are still great, but it'll be a slog to get to them.

When you talked about crocodile being weak I really can't object to that since it's what it's shown to us to this point but being someone that is following the weakly manga i have a head cannon that he was using his devil fruit powers to the max (Don't want to spoil so i will leave it at that) to not let rain in whole Alabasta, which is pretty big, so when he fought Luffy he wasn't in his 100% strength, tho that's not really said anywhere just a theory

I think a big reason why you guys aren’t as invested in One Piece as most of the fans is because of the way the anime is paced. It isn’t as snappy as in the manga so a lot of moments that normally have a lot more impact can fall a bit flat. A lot of One Piece fans got into it as relatively new anime fans so they didn’t have an idea or expectations on the more technical side of storytelling and pacing etc (me included). Thats why I always recommend One Pace because it 1 million percent will enhance your enjoyment of the show. One piece is genuinely a masterpiece when everything is done right, even in this adaptation. PS: I don’t think you guys have particularly higher standards than most anime fans btw. The shows you guys like are relatively in line with what most anime fans enjoy too.

With Rayleigh complimenting the crews for withstanding his Haki, saying they must be strong, that really shows that even the 'weaker' Straw Hats, like Nami and Ussop, are actually quite strong. Don't worry if you can't figure out Law's abilities. Even by One Piece standards, his Devil Fruit is odd and not intuitive in figuring it out at first look.

Try yo take into account which anime existed at that time and all this will be even more impactful
