Hey Ray, people like cool things, and what you built 15 years ago, is (still) cool, even today, so that's saying a lot about your skills. Also, you're addressing people who regularly don't want to use what they learned in school, reading, at long lengths, and quick mathematics figures, this is why you see a lot of people pushing on doors, despite the clear sign over the door handle that says "Pull". As for cost, anyone can scavenge those tubes and caps alternatively, either in junk yards, scrap yards, yes, they be found even scrapyards or town transfer stations. friend of mine wanted to put in a drain on his three acre land and three ten foot lengths of theses tubes and two caps at the scrapyard, they sold all of it to him for $100, this was three weeks ago. but ask your local reclamation centers and follow their policies, for safety sake.
@RayMAKES8 жыл бұрын
Eddie, you are so right! you should see how many comments i received on my other video and how many were "PVC PIPES ARE TOO EXPENSIVE" . when i was looking to make this boat i made dozens of phone calls to be able to find the best location for the tubes. now i would definitely look into scrap yards for my source materials! thanks for the encouragement!

also, it is weird that So many people asked the same questions over and over. no one bothered to read the description of the video nor any of the previous several hundred comments....when i watch a video and have a question, the first thing i do is check the description.

@RayMAKES3 жыл бұрын
Sure could
@GEAUXFRUGAL8 жыл бұрын
$250 you could have a 20 ft long boat not bad. Sure it would have cost more wood but you could have had the deck to the rear and used net in the front. Think about it like this if you made them right you could build pontoon rafts that nose a boat into shuttle them into the swamp with a trampoline in the middle. That would give you a wonderful raft with a neat place to hang out if you put a tarp over the trampoline. If you did the frame for the tarp right you could have 5-6 hammocks that can hang and proved shelter for them people.

Great videos! How stable is this pontoon? Would it make a good fishing platform?
@RayMAKES8 жыл бұрын
absolutely, i use to stand on it while under power, and i could put all my weight directly on any of the corners without getting the deck wet!. glad you liked the videos, thanks for watching
@heatherclark26237 жыл бұрын
Ray Pena That is super helpful info (full weight on any corner w/o getting the deck wet! That's AWESOME. Did you ever take anyone else out on it with you? ), as is this video. Thanks for clarifing your other video about this project. And awesome idea to re-cycle it into a swing set! (what kind of paint did you use on it?) I bet they were sooo happy. ☺☺☺ Super cute. A few questions for you: When you used the straps to attach the deck to the pontoons, 1) did the pontoons stay fairly stationary, or did they rotate/spiral around at all? Just wondering, in case I would want to heat-shape the front of the pontoons (bc wouldn't want them spinning sideways lol). How did you attach your cones??? Another video mentioned using TAPE(!!!), but if specific adhesive/pvc epoxy that is actually intended for "marine" purposes can come undone (whether in freshwater, or ocean brine), I could NOT imagine some random duct tape (or even heavier duty "Gorilla tape") being very effective! Did you attach the cones you used over top of the end caps? I would think you would need those endcaps to be still in place (instead of using traffic cones *instead of* the end caps), but really don't know enough about all of this yet (someone else's video looked like they left the ends OPEN, which does NOT seem like it would work at ALL! That (and the apparently insanely crazy price of endcaps) was the reason for the question of being able to use cones "instead" of caps). He used much longer traffic cones (were they not available when you built yours, or more expensive maybe?), but aren't traffic cones always open at the ends? (your cones were closed at the pointed end, weren't they? ) If you were to use traffic cones with open ends, wouldn't you have to seal the ends closed somehow? Did you notice a huge increase in your hydrodynamics even after attaching the smaller cones like you showed in your picture? Were those cheaper/more readily available than the longer traffic cones? This is turning into more than just a few questions lol, but I appreciate if you're able to get back to me (& if YT actually notifies me that you did so I can hear your thoughts). Also, Did you notice any flexing/rotating from one side to the other as you went over uneven waves? (ex, left front dips down while right front raises up... "portside" of the "bow" going one way while the "starboard" side goes the other way. Not up on the lingo yet lol) Another video mentioned that he bolted the deck to the pontoons with his second boat (instead of tying in place as he had in his first iteration), but he felt that it was a mistake when he did so because it made the frame overall become too rigid and not have enough flex for going over waves (might have torn apart while out on the water later, he didn't mention). He had a smaller deck located in/across the center of the pontoons, then fore and aft spreader/ stablizers, and a mast and sail in the middle (uh... "midships"...? Not sure, lol). Also, you said that at the end of your first year with it, that the galvanized straps were "done". Did you mean they were falling apart or disintegrating? That would be a really good thing to keep in mind (esp for other beginners, as I am), as even if we didn't intend something to last forever when we first constructed it, we tend to think of them as existing into permanence, and that could cause major safety issues down the line if something were to snap off out in the open water 😨😨😨. How did you ratchet down/tighten your straps? I haven't done any sailing as of yet, but I've been watching a TON of these videos on KZbin, and I'm getting REALLY excited about some of these ideas 😀 Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and ideas, and the process of being new to this fun stuff. 🙏🌞

Is there a material list somewhere? I know you'll need screws and glue as well. Why is the boat only good for a year? I'm a widow, but love to be on the water. The boat I have now, I can't get it out of the water by my self. I thought this would be something I could leave in the water. What's your thoughts.

OK im confused, you said the pontoon was 12 inches correct? a 12 inch pipe will have an area of 452.39 cubic inches, then you said you multiplu that by the feet of the tubing, which was 5ft, 452.39*5=2,291.95, you then multiblied that number by 62, so 2,291.95*62=140,120.9 lbs per pontoon.. where did i make my mistake?
@RayMAKES8 жыл бұрын
+Dj Joker Wild you made a few mistakes...the pontoons are 10 feet long. Then you mixed the units (feet and inches). The 62 lbs is per cubic foot, so all unit must be converted to cu ft BEFORE you multiply by 62
@shalifiDhempir8 жыл бұрын
ok, so it should read 12*10=120, then i should divide 120 by 12 to get 12 cu ft, then multiply by 64 to get 768, does that look right? ik im terribvle at math, i'm asking because i'm trying to do something similar with rain barrels...
@RayMAKES8 жыл бұрын
area of 12" - πr² = 113in² A x l= V - 113 x120 = 13560 in³ In³/1728= ft³ - 13560/1728 = 7.85 ft³ ft³x62 = capacity - 7.85 x 62 = 486 lbs
