What do you think about Gareth Southgate as a manager? 🤔

Terrible. Allergic to adjusting, no tactical buildup relies on his teams talent to score with little game plan, his players look lost. He somehow takes a lead then makes 5 defensive subs to park the bus not to mention they always have one of the easiest paths.

@liams44114 ай бұрын
@@hyywe240 There were better teams when England had a 'Golden Generation' in the 2000s on paper - just look at France, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Italy, Netherlands and Portugal's squads at that time. Since 2020 only France and arguably Portugal have a better squad than England have, yet we still won nothing despite having fairly favourable tournament draws. Where I will give Southgate praise is that in 2020, 2022 and 2024 he won his Group which enabled England to have a better chance in the knockouts whereas the Golden Generation were 2nd in 2002, 2004 and 2010 in their said groups. England lacked cohesion in 2024, and any form of identity which is why Spain won the final and easily looked the best team throughout the tournament. Truthfully, England always relied on individual quality to win matches throughout Gareth's time, and whenever he faced up against a team who could tactically out manouever our side, he failed (Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, Belgium). A decent manager, but still failed despite having everything go his way and having an abundance of quality at his disposal. I am still shocked that after equalising late on vs Spain that England AGAIN decided to do a low block despite the fact momentum had just swung our way. It was tactically really poor. He did well to also bring some pride back to England and the fact players were really keen to play for the shirt is testament to his man management skills, but that will only get you so far, as proven. England now need a Manager capable of forming a 'team' to get the best out of the squad and not just selecting an 11 of great indviduals.

And he failed to play Watkins alongside Toney the whole tournament. I will say this though, had Southgate been brave enough to stick Saka left wing (where he might actually be able to cross a ball with his stronger foot) and play Trent as right wing back, the only player who seemed to be able to make a telling pass.... For England, Gareth Southgate was a poor man's Jose Mourinho, which is insulting to Mourinho. Southgate was a good manager to rebuild the national team, but he used up all of his time. He was supposed to be a short-term hire for a short-to-medium term problem. We know that he plays conservative, defensive football, but his squad is too offensive. We know that Southgate wanted more defensively minded players when he commented how he wanted Kalvin Phillips, who was injured, in the team. Luke Shaw has never been the same player since his 2015 double leg break, and he is a defensive liability, where I agree with Mourinho's assessment of Shaw. Harry Kane was allegedly injured, so he would not be fit enough to press the opposition. Phil Foden is a luxury player, who is not a good defender. Jude Bellingham is another luxury player, who can work a miracle once and a while, so maybe, he is worth keeping on the field. Nowadays, having one luxury player is questionable for tacticians, but two luxury players is bad. We know why Southgate kept Cole Palmer on the bench because Palmer is not a conservative player. He takes initiative and focuses on attacking first, which goes against Southgate's philosophy. Similar story with Eberechi Eze. Ollie Watkins is an energetic forward, so why not play him over Harry Kane? In terms of players missing, Fikayo Tomori and Chris Smalling have been doing well in Italian Serie A. Ben Chilwell, Reece James, Tammy Abraham, and Jarrod Bowen are notable players not in the squad although they might be injured. At the end of the day, Southgate is a defensive manager, who ran through his luck. He did a good job, but he is not a trophy-winning manager.

If you don't know, while Gareth Southgate's England had an unlucky things when it comes to success in major tournaments, the women's team of England (the Lionesses) managed to achieve something that the men's team couldn't in recent times at the same period. A year after the men's side suffered a heartbreak at the Euro 2020 Final, the women's team managed to win their first major trophy of the senior team since 1966. They beat Germany after extra time in the Women's Euro 2022 Final, which was also played at Wembley. This women's team also somehow went all the way to the Women's World Cup Final a year later, though they ended up losing to Spain (this script was eventually repeated in the men's Euro Final this year). This Women's World Cup run for England was even historic, given the fact they lost several key players through injuries. Both of them were done under the former Dutch women's team coach Sarina Wiegman. In the past, the women's team of England are known for little success in major tournaments, with few exceptions such as the Women's Euro 2009 Final and the Women's World Cup 2015 3rd Place finishes.

The problem with this idea of “all these other nations had better squads” is that you don’t actually have to have the best squad to win it, or even the best performances, such is the randomness of football. Tournaments are not a hunger games style fight to the death - tou don’t have to beat every team to win one, and if the draw is favourable, you might avoid them all until the final. And to illustrate my point, right in the middle of this era of golden generations, the 2004 Euros were won by Greece. If they can do it and then England certainly should have been able to.

I can't understand how people watched this guy for 8 years with top level talent playing like a third rate team and still believe he's good because he had extremely lucky draws in two tournaments ( 3 if you include the world cup they lost to Croatia they had a great path there as well)
@rogerioceni26404 ай бұрын
Like everything on the internet, the “stans” and “haters” are both insufferable. Southgate should’ve stepped down after the World Cup but he obviously did a good job, at least for the first five years. It’s absolutely right to move on and he is tactically short of what is required but he achieved a lot. We were the absolute pits in 2016 and had been a second or third tier nation for the previous decade. He got us back on our feet and made us look like a team for the first time in years rather than a bunch of individuals. It’s easy for people to downplay the 2018 World Cup but we went into that with people saying it was the worst England squad in years and that we’d be going home in the first round. That tournament reinvigorated people’s support for and pride in the national team. I don’t think we get close to competing for the last two Euros if we didn’t have that tournament.
@rogerioceni26404 ай бұрын
But, yeah, I’m still furious with the guy for the fact that he didn’t learn from his mistakes in 2021 this time around. The Euros was a tournament too far for him (2022 should’ve been the one really as the France game was arguably the best performance against a big side and it was genuinely just bad luck and dodgy refereeing that cost us) and with a bit more tactical sophistication we had the talent to win it and play a lot better football. Southgate was a perfect manager for an underdog side - which we were in the early days - but not the right fit for a squad full of world class talent. My main defence for him in the last few years would be that he still doesn’t have a top class CM which is pretty much essential to dominating football matches.

I always wondered why, with the Golden Generation, there seemingly was too much of an issue that the stars were playing for rival clubs. The concurent Italy team was full of stars who were either a key player for their teams (Vieri for Inter, Doni for Atalanta, Baggio for Brescia, Inzaghi for Milan, Buffon for Juventus and so on) or even their *captain* (Nesta for Lazio before joining Milan, Maldini for Milan, Cannavaro for Parma before changing team, Totti for Roma, Del Piero for Juventus). Everyone still put aside this, when donning the Azzurri shirt. And this was a time when those teams were competing not just for Italian, but also for *European* silverware. I wonder why England players couldn't have done this

If you continuously play the "ugly game" - as Southgate has done throughout his career as a player and manager - and do not end up winning any trophies, you are toast - 🤪. With him as a manager, England played some of the most turgid football I have ever seen, particularly if you factor in the wealth of players at his disposal. The American comedian Jacky Mason once came up with the following: "If sex is good, it is very good. If it's bad, still good." England's football team in the last 60 years would best be described as follows: "If England win, it looks bad. If they lose, it looks very, very bad."

Southgate never shows real emotion during a match. Its a bit like his number 2 steve holland,who in my opinion is an absolute waste. It should not matter if your team is winning or losing or playing poor or great football. As a proper manager ,you are supposed to berate your players,praise your players and encourage them to carry out your plan. Unfortunately logic was clearly missing concerning southgate I will only blame steve holland for being mouse like on the side lines,because if the manager see's his assitant coach going ballistic about something on the pitch,it stands to reason that you react and are on the same level. English football i am afraid is not all what it seems,because the english premier league has more players that are not english and that probably the same about the managers Southgate is a nearly man,and thats only because of the teams he has faced in the knockout tournaments If southgate ever dares to go into club football managment,my logic tells me that it would not go well How can you have high quality players and not get the best out of them How can you have high quality players and have them sitting on the bench How can you not include certain players in this euro24 Questions southgate has asked himself and got all the most important questions completly wrong, and that is why he is a loser

Italy’s run to the final in 2006? Argentina in 2022? People massively exaggerate when they say England had extraordinarily easy runs. Switzerland, Sweden and Denmark were all very good sides at their respective tournaments, Netherlands are always a threat, Colombia’s record in tournaments from 2016-present has been excellent, Germany’s side was half of the Bayern Munich Champions League winning team of 2020 plus three of the Chelsea CL winners of 2021 and Croatia were in between consecutive World Cup semi-final appearances. 2:50 Sir Alex Ferguson said defense wins championships, and he's absolutely right. It does. What he didn't say was how to defend. Defending doesn't just mean having all your players sit back, defending is about suppressing enemy attacks before they can score. Nowadays, a lot of teams defend from the front (i.e. they press high) instead of from the back; and the England NT squad looked perfect for a high press tactic. But Southgate insisted on having players who were used to pressing high instead sit back.
