Yours was the first and last video I watched. I'm 66 yrs young retired . I have to watch alit of how to videos. Thank You so much, you explained step by step easy to follow directions. It doesn't matter whether you tap the wire or cut and splice it. The voltage is going to travel down the same paths. Cutting and soldering is always a better connection than a wire tap; it's just more work to do it right. The reverse light should only be used as a trigger and not a power source anyway.

Awesome videos! I'm definitely going to try installing a backup camera on my 2013 C300, however the command center looks different than the one you installed on. Also the reason the you can tap into the tail light for the camera power and not get the voltage drop error is because voltage remains constant across parallel circuits which is what you essentially did. Thanks for all the videos!

As a person who designed and released wiring harnesses in the automotive industry, I would disagree with this method. Insulation displacement connections are easy to use, but after time the connection will likely become intermittent. From the perspective of the OEM harness manufacturer, this method would not be used. Cut, solder, and sealed shrink tubing is a robust way to tap in... then of course use a relay as not to draw too much current. That's the kindest way I could think of to comment. And vehicle architecture for detecting bulb outage is usually done by measuring current not voltage. Your description is incorrect. Now a bunch of people have been misinformed. Please find a better source for your information.

A lot of good info but you can also run the camera/parking sensors off a relay. I've fitted cameras to Mercedes c200's and ran the camera off a relay. Remember never solder the camera wire on to the reverse signal wire. Another thing to note is cameras require 12v to power on properly with a lot of modern cars when the engine is started the voltage to the reverse light drops to sometimes below 11v the camera will not come on or you get horizontal lines on the display there you can use a relay aswel.

I think the warning message is for the bulb (lamp) being out or technically an open circuit not a voltage "drop". Still a great video - it's nice to have a fuse panel in the trunk - makes for easy add-ons ;-). As others have pointed out probably the "best" way would be to cut and solder the wires and perhaps use a relay to avoid more current being pulled that was originally designed but it being a German car I'm sure everything was over engineered and the reverse light wires could probably take more than the 5 or 10 watts the stock bulb pulls thinking that us Americans will replace the incandescent lamps with LEDs anyhow ;-) Great video!
@djkrazymm5026 жыл бұрын
Use a constant fused power wire from battery to camera and a relay from the back up light tap to use as a switch for on/off, it will be ideal! Might as well run a heavy gauge fused power wire from battery to the trunk and add a little fuse panel, or junction box with several terminals. It will be constant power supply for multiple auxiliary gadgets you like to power in the back of the car. Then just hook relay for camera, relay for rear auxiliary lights, relay for rear monitors, or relay for rear amplifier! Just a thought...Peace

First thanks for your video of how to wire the reverse camera. I followed exactly the same way you did in the video, and having 2 problems now: 1. I'm installing a reverse camera on my Mini Cooper, and even with the proper T-tap, I still get the lamp error on my dash. 2. My mini cooper's reverse power line is 12v while the car not start, and it will step up to 13.5V when the car is started. That making my camera to act weird. If you have a solution for these 2 problems, please let me know, appreciate a lot!
@RaymondUrias6 жыл бұрын
I actually just made a video for mini Coopers. It's on my channel. With that being said they are very sensitive to voltage drops and you need a capacitor shown in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYaymqmwgsqip7c
@GetErDun844511 ай бұрын
The blue insulation displacement connector (IDC) is for 14-18AWG wire. If your wires are smaller gauge then use the red IDC 18 to 22AWG. Using the wrong size IDC can cut through the copper wire and not just the insulation as it is designed to do. Vibration is not your friend with this type of connector. Secure it so the wires don't move when driving or use a different method to connect like others posted down below.

+Luis Sampaio that looks really cool and integrated but I feel for the money you can get a much better camera. I'm currently reviewing the Roav Cam 1 and I'm VERY impressed with it. It has a parking mode that works very well. There are several cameras out there and each year they get better. Definitely check it out: www.amazon.com/dp/B06XNSDRW8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_tV2xAbFD2RR8J I personally like the parking feature because I go to car car shows and leave my lights on and I want to know if someone touches my car or keys it. Tidy work and nice video, but the explanation is not accurate. The computer doesn't feel that the copper has been cut. There are two ways to know if the bulb is out, 1- by measuring the current through the wire and when it's too low or too high it means the bulb is burned or shorted. 2- checking the voltage drop, when the voltage drops slightly below the supply it means the bulb is fine. Anyway, it's a good video.

Be careful using test lights, much better off using even a cheap digital multimeter. There's always the possibility of the test light introducing too much current back into the circuit and damaging a sensitive computer such as your BCM or ECU depending on what you are testing. Also, the correct way would be either perform a military splice and tape or solder and heat shrink. Solder is not going to add extra resistance to the line if done correctly, there's a reason that every data connection on a remote start is soldered if done properly. Using a t-tap butt connector or crimp camp runs the risk of introducing extra resistance to the circuit and potentially getting a result that's non-functional or sporadic. Not saying this is always going to happen but it's better to be safe than sorry. Either way good job on the video, presentation was excellent.

+Whisper Slade ok I'm going to answer this with video links First check out the new T2 it's nice kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpCTlZ14iqahZrM And your question is answered in this long old video I made.....im really sorry it's so long I didn't Know how to edit back then kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXXGaX5vbKqgnrs The M1W uses a cigarette lighter for the screen. I'm pretty sure you will like the new T2 it soooo easy

Try using a relay that should help you out. I have a video how to install it

Thanks for great video and very helpful topic. Will use method to tap into my Honda wiring. Re: your vehicle's computer/dash fault indicator I understand voltage drop concepts, but do not follow why, you when now you activate camera/radar, the dashboard fault does not return as computer notes voltage drop from camera/radar. Hope question makes sense.

Preston Ren Question makes complete sense. The camera is consuming nothing in the long run. The computer measures the current. There is a very small, known, resistance in the circuit, and a differential voltage measurement is taken across the resistor, which give the current in the circuit. If this current is below the threshold value, the bulb is assumed to be burned out. This is why when you upgrade to LEDS you need to use a resistor to trick the computer since LEDS use so little energy.

+Preston Ren I just checked out of curiosity the camera with radar is pulling 1.5A which is nothing literally a led bulb
