Is there anyway to get the alerts to be more specific? For example, I don’t want tornado watches or thunderstorm warnings. I only want tornado warnings.

It's unlikely the tiny solar panel will actually charge it unless you can completely turn the radio off. Most of these will display the clock time and date even when "off". Solar power may extend standby time but power gen from solar is miniscule.
