Stop shelling out grants for billionaires....
@cpl.m96454 күн бұрын
It's not a grant. Cities build a stadium and have teams sign long term leases so a team is forced to stay, city collects rent and growth occurs around area. Use to be a problem long time ago where teams would move city to city.
@scotttild3 күн бұрын
But the rent and the money generated never work out for the cities. Almost every stadium bull has caused cities to have to dip into the general fund to pay for what ever bonds were issued with very few exceptions. Raiders are costing Clark County millions every year, the taxes have expired and didn’t cover the entire build, so now there is a shortfall. Meanwhile the value of the Raiders have doubled. Tell me again why Davis could not have built it without tax payer money At least he should have paid back the city for the shortfall.
@Jonathanstockwell4 күн бұрын

Not a Rays fan, but this lies for the most part on Pinellas county. You should blame them. They changed the insurance policy payout from $100m to $25m. Second, the fact is that they “took their ball home with them” because the Rays chose to relocate to Tampa where the fans actually are. New Orleans didn’t go out of the way and drive the Saints out of town after hurricane katrina. It says a lot about the Pinellas county that they would kill this stadium proposal like sore losers. An asshole owner who saw riches in presumably more lucrative Las Vegas rather than get a new ballpark done in Oakand. What my contacts there think is baseball fans in LV don't want the A's, they want expansion with a fresh start. I don't think this deal will be done. And what then? Not one but two franchises lost in the wilderness. Division realignment becomes interesting if that happened. AL West: L.A. Angels, Las Vegas, Oakland, Seattle, Kansas City AL Central: Houston, Minnesota, Texas, C. White Sox, Cleveland AL East: Detroit, Boston, Toronto, N.Y. Yankees, Baltimore Texas teams are going to stay together (sucks to be Kansas City). Cleveland outpoliticked Detroit for the final AL Central slot back in 1994 (the first year of the 6 division alignment).

There are too many teams. It doesn’t matter where you move them. There will always be a few of them that can’t get fans no matter how good they are. The stadium hostage thing is ridiculous because it’s a business model rather than a one-time thing from the 1990s-2000s as advertised. They do it every 10-15 hears now instead of every 30.

The money that Pinellas is voting on can't be used for that. It's strictly for tourism. It can be used for the beaches and that's the big reason the vote got delayed the first time. Pinellas wasn't sure what FEMA would cover so they didn't want to spend what would amount to $600 million on a ballpark if the beaches needed more money than what FEMA would cover.

Besides damage from hurricane. How does a team that’s what 20years old or so think building a new stadium is better that repairing the one that is still newer than 60% (or more) stadiums currently in MLB? How long did the MLBs winningest team, Yankees, play in Yankee Stadium before they rebuilt the new one? This is a clear ploy to leave the area.

Tampa Bay isnt in an area geographically to have any sport teams anymore. This includes the Bucs. Weather is only going to get worse in Florida as years go on. Its not worth millions of tax payer dollars to pay for these stadiums there anymore. Plus people in Florida dont care about professional baseball locally. They’re going to Montreal. Don’t forget that the Rays wanted to play HALF their home games in a new stadium in Montreal just a few short years ago. Therefore, someone in Montreal is willing to build them a new stadium and that someone is already familiar with the Rays ownership - probably Bell Canada. Bell Canada recently sold their stake in MLSE ( Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment ) for $4.7B CDN. They would have needed to raise money for something or likely wouldn’t have sold their MLSE stake and buying all or half of the Rays and a new Montreal ballpark seems about right.

If they can't get a deal by December, MLB needs to step in, and force Steinburg to sell a stake to help pay for this, force him to sell outright, or give him a year windows to find a city that will basically pay for everything. Salt Lake is shovel ready. And i believe Nashville is as well? Could be wrong on that... it doesn't make sense to put money into the Trop if they're either moving, or building something new.
