All the way back in May of 1987, Ray Stevens' song "Would Jesus Wear A Rolex?" peaked at #41 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart! The song was written by Chet Atkins & Margaret Archer and appeared on Ray's "Crackin' Up" album. Here's Ray performing "Would Jesus Wear A Rolex?/Everything Is Beautiful" live on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1988!

The older I get, the more I realize that the two best Ray Stevens songs are not “Guitarzan” or “The Streak” or even “it’s Me Again Margaret”, it’s actually these two. Both of these songs are masterpieces and extremely underrated.

I never, ever thought this performance would ever surface online but there it is!! I'd read about Ray having appeared on "The Tonight Show" several times but this is the first time I've seen video of an appearance...and Johnny Carson holding the 1987 vinyl album in front of the camera. I had mistakenly assumed that Johnny told the audience before a commercial break that Ray Stevens was coming up and then, after the commercial break, the camera would already be on Ray. I had no idea that Johnny actually provided an introduction and promoted Ray's album before the performance...so that was something of a revelation to me.

Ray is still going. His venue in Nashville is called ‘Cabaray’. Ray also produced records for Monument back in the day of 45 RPM vinyl singles. A good one I remember is Jim Glaser’s “Thanks A Lot For Trying Anyway”.
