Great lessons Mr. Razavi. One short question: Can we directly drive the load from the source of the transistor and avoid the Rs all together? I am thinking to build this circuit (and use as a buffer) to connect my HF radio and SDR radio to the same antenna. If the 1/gm would be close to 50 Ohm that would be a good match for the input of the SDR. Otherwise it can be lower, but maybe that is not a problem for the SDR input. Side note: I will build another small circuit to disconnect the SDR input from the HF radio output when transmitting.

@ 41:47 why isn't Rd taken into account? Anyway, great material Dr. Razavi, many thanks.

Rd is present only in the CG stage of the cascaded amplifier.... It comes into play only for the individual gain of CG stage

in the minutes 38:08 Why do I consider like resistance on the emitter only the 50 ohms and not also the resistance that I see inside the emitter of M2 in parallel at 50 ohm?

Can anybody please explain how one can decide the resistance offered by a specific configuration as viewed from a point in the circuit for example at 41:30 in this lecture?
@vprakash2471
@vprakash2471 4 жыл бұрын
That is the basic definition of input or output impedance. When we connect a source we see some current... This voltage by current is the input impedance. So we can alternatively say that the resistance seen from these terminals is input impedance

@38:14 isn't the gm 1/40 ? there is mistake here the gain should be -12,49
@goldfishdoc1999

gm is 1/40.... but the gain of source follower is Rs/(Rs + 1/gm).... So value of 1/gm = 40

Why is Rs necessary here? anyhow videos are extraordinary
@chewwjkful

Just my own interpretation, it could be wrong. Without Rs, the source terminal shorted directly to the ground which means that the Vout will be equal to 0 volt. Hence, Rs is required so as there is IR drop across the Rs which act also as the Vout

The input signal is due to the transconductance property of the mosfet converted to a current. Therefore I guess Rs is needed to convert the current signal back to a voltage signal, in other words the output signal is sensed by Rs. The resistor Rs acts like a negative feedback device or degeneration device too and stabilises the whole circuit which is a nice bonus. Please correct me if I'm wrong

you need a DC bias current path to GND otherwise in the absence of a signal ID would be zero which means no gm (circuit is dead).
