The Razer Nommo Pro speakers were just launched at a price of $500 and carry a THX certification. However, the $150 Klipsch Promedia 2.1 THX have been around forever and are still seen as some of the best PC speakers around. So is the $350 premium for Razer's set worth it?

Note that new THX certification means nothing because Razer owns THX.

Great point. This could actually be why Klipsch has now released a non-THX version of this.

it still does mean something, even if they own THX, there will be a minimum standard THX has made before the acquisition , and if that minimum standard isnt met by the new nommo pros. then razer is blatantly lying and misleading its customers... TATA Motors India owns Landrover and Jaguar, doesnt mean we have to assume they are bad. And i dont see George Lucas doing nothing if his old brands' name was going down.

Still seems the best dedicated PC speakers were all made back in the early 2000's... The Klipsch Promedia's and Logitech Z-5500's still haven't been improved on outside of silly extra bling features so not surprised in the slightest to hear the Razer's are also nothing special. However, I'd argue the market has moved much more towards headphones, external DAC's/amps and monitor speaker setups instead of 2.1/5.1 systems. Would be nice to see some comparisons and information along those lines. Value and quality wise that route seems to offer much better options.

I agree with your comment and what timing... Yesterday I dug out my two front Boston Acoustics satellite speakers (about 22 years old) and a Carver M-200t amplifier (29 years old) and connected it to my PC. It sounds great, but the OG sub-woofer bit the dust years ago. Now I'm shopping for a small powered sub to connect for 2.1. It'll likely be an Acoustic Audio PSW-8 ($89.88). So for less than $100 using re-purposed equipment and one new item I'll have sound that is 1000 times better than this hokey plastic garbage. Go read more recent reviews on Amazon about the Klipsch speakers. It sounds like they break inside of 12 months.
@alecday3775

Still there are those who don't really know how or have the patience to set up a studio monitor setup. So keeping good high end dedicated PC speakers relevant keeps that as an alternative for those who are like that. I prefer having something simple like the Pro Medias cause of the simplicity and ease-of-setup. There is nothing to really think about or to really set up with the set other than the actual speakers and there are far less wires to deal with. So there are a lot of benefits with going with a good set of desktop PC speakers as opposed to a studio monitor setup and another is that if you don't really have the space for the actual monitor speakers on your desk at all cause they are about the same size as standard bookshelf speakers so they are pretty large and could take up a lot of space on your desk if your desk is pretty small or the space you have is pretty tight and might be a little too overpowering for the space your desk is in. Those are things to consider as well. Not everyon is going to have the space on their desk or in their room for studio monitors.
@kenhoward127
@kenhoward127 6 жыл бұрын
I may be wrong, but I think he meant speakers on a display monitor. Who'd put bookshelf speakers on their desk? I'm not talking small satellite speakers like I'm using, which are slightly smaller than both the Klipsch and the Razer, but of much, much higher quality.

I bought a used set of first gen Harman Kardon Sound Sticks (all wired, just USB) for about $50 last year. They're now 18 years old. I know they're not the best speakers, and weren't even the best price/performance back then, but for fifty bucks they're amazing. It's not surprising though. Speakers are an analog technology and good sound in the 80s is still good now. And it's not easy to shrink speakers, since they benefit from physically larger enclosures.

A friend of mine had his BlackWidow Ultimate 'O' key not working just after passing the 2-year warranty period, while the DeathAdder Elite had it's rubber sidegrip slipping off and his Kraken's wiring wear-out. I managed to convince him to leave the cult and grab stuff my other friends (and also myself) have tried and tested; Corsair and Logitech. The most expensive part of any sound system is the speaker. Sometimes manufacturers focus on bells and whistles but neglect the quality of the speaker because of the high cost. @thathorrorshow4126
@thathorrorshow4126 6 жыл бұрын
@@biohzard235 everything is measured in hertz. Bass, midrange and treble. Those are the most common features an audio product carries. A lot of factors can influence the sound of a speaker. The cone, the magnet and even the casing of the speaker. How many watts, how many ohms. Does the speaker have a good projection? Its a wide topic on speakers alone. That's why musicians love to swap the guitar amp speaker out, and install a better one that matches with there wooden cabinet. High end sound systems are made of exotic woods like mahogany, because wood is the best casing. In this case most small gaming speakers are made of plastic casings. Many brands mention there specs in hertz. Unlike Samsung where sometimes they dont. Truth of the matter is when a good manufacturer makes an audio system they just keep in mind what you will need, because the speaker is one of the most expensive parts to finish there product. Some manufacturers...some, try to distract your attention from the speaker with features like Bluetooth and all the nonsense that will not aid in a great sounding experience.

The Klipsch are AMAZING, and goes to show what real "audio" companies can do when you don't need to spend most of their budget on marketing and aesthetics (rgb LOL). A true 2.1 setup still can easily outperform the Klipsch but that is at least double the price. The technology may not have advanced much in the audio world, but you still need great design (and Klipsch has been in this audio game perfecting sound since 1946)

Klipsch is not only a speaker company but they are a damn good speaker company. Razer makes keyboards and mice. That's really all you need to know. I wasn't as impressed when I heard a pair of Klipsch tower speakers... I wonder if the pro media sub is equalised. It's a tall order to get 31Hz out of something that small without it, and not have the 31Hz at - 10dB compared to the rest of the signal. I could claim a 1" driver can play 20Hz to 20kHz. And it's true. Sure, the 20Hz may be - 60dB down at 30cm, but it's still playing it...

I've used Klipsch speakers many times in the past and have always loved their products. But unfortunately, as much as I wanted those Pro Media speakers for my computer, trying to find them in the UK was a nightmare. As much as I tried, I just could never find any for purchase. They were always either out of stock, discontinued, or had unreasonably over-inflated prices out here. I finally had to give up trying. I use Edifier C2DX speakers for my computer now. Great speakers in their own right (truly they are), but I will always be disappointed that I was never able to get the speakers I actually wanted.

Consumers should vote against such crap by not spending any money on it and educating others about this topic.

Hi. I currently own the Klipsch set you reviewed which I purchased after doing a fair bit of research myself. Also why I was interested in watching the review. I agree with your findings in that the Klipsch are the speakers to beat from a value perspective. I had to replace what I consider to be "the standard" set in the under $500 desktop speaker market segment. The Altec Lansing ADA885 4.1 LucasFilm THX certified. Unfortunately, that model is no longer available. They came bundled with a Dell computer I bought in the year 2000! If you search that model, you will find owners trying to salvage them by any means necessary because nothing else really compares even today. Anyway the Klipsch came closest to my old speakers so those were the ones I got. Haven't regretted it but they still aren't the Altec Lansing cans. The sub-woofer is at least 30% smaller and less capable but at lower volumes, they are just as good. - Altec Lansing ADA885 4.1 LucasFilm THX certified - 103dB @ 120W, frequency response of 27Hz-20kHz - Klipsch Promedia 2.1 THX - 106dB @ 130W, frequency response of 31Hz-20kHz - Logitech Z906 5.1 THX - 103dB @ 500W, frequency response of 35Hz-20kHz - Razer Nommo Pro 2.1 "THX" - ??? @ 210W, frequency response of 35Hz-20kHz Someone out there has to be able to make something better without audiophile prices. Maybe not in my lifetime. Thanks for the review.
