I've been using a David plane for some time and I'm happy with it. As you mentioned, the blades are non--standard, but they last a good long time.

Love my David plane too!

Ill have to look into a David plane!

Thanks! I'm pretty sure you want the blade parallel where it comes out of the plane. Your comment about woodworkers preferring that angle is I think about how you hold the plane when you're shaving with it - rotate your wrist a bit before sliding along your workpiece as though the plane is skidding a bit. The replacement blades on the Master Airscrew look to my eye like a fairly common blade used in matte cutters (used for matting images when framing). So probabyl not proprietary (but certainly not as cheap as the disposable shaving razors).

Well done. I haven’t used many planes when building but I am going to start. I did read the best way to store them is in a plastic bowl filled with wood shavings, blade side down.

Thanks, and interesting about the storage.

I also used various X-Acto blades to carve until I started using the Master Airscrew planner years ago. I recently switched to a David Combi plane ($20). I like that it’s made out of aluminum and multiple planning options.

I've got a few of those I got back in the 90s and 1 uses blades you can get in the hardware store and the other uses regular safety blades and you can set the angle of the blades for how much wood you need to remove! They are really helpful for wing leading edges and anywhere you need to remove a lot of balsa quickly and after that I move to sanding with a heavy grit sanding block!

The airscrew blades look like Logan Graphics 267-100 Mat Cutter Blades, I got a pack of 100 for $25 to for my mat cutter (framed artwork). You may be able to get them cheaper or in smaller quantities as well. For those unfamiliar with them, they're thicker than a normal razor blade and very sharp.

Thanks for the suggestion, I also looked into other blade providers. As you say, you can get them in larger quantities and cheaper. Im sure MAS isn’t making their own blades. I think they have a number on them, look ti up and find other suppliers! Thanks for pointing that out

A rasp works great for in between the plane and the sandpaper!

I wouldn't be without my David plane.

I usually put masking tape on the parts right behind the edge I'm doing so I don't mess it up!

Thats a good tip, I’ll try to remember when I go to trim that leading edge back

The problem is with these is that wood kits are harder to find these days
@JamesRCPlaneTech Жыл бұрын
Yep, for sure. Fortunately as for now there are still some manufacturers producing them some, and then there are many still on ebay (for now). I don’t think they will ever gain back near the popularity they were, and I bet the few companies that still make some are going extinct as well.

@@JamesRCPlaneTech I built almost every plane that sig manufacturing put out and a couple weeks ago I looked at their website and they still had a couple planes in stock and that was it so I went ahead and ordered a sig Wonder just to have it on the shelf if I ever get bored someday

You better sheet the leading edge before you cut any more off !!
@JamesRCPlaneTech Жыл бұрын
Ya thanks. this is the overhang on the leading edge that has to be trimmed about 1/4 inch before sheeting. So this piece gets cut to the rib profile, then sheeting, then the last piece of leading edge stock is added, then final shaping.

@@JamesRCPlaneTech oky doky!! You know what your doing, looks awesome.

Well I wouldn’t go that far, lol! I’m finding lots of little problems with this kit that are making me have to work a lot more than I want. Hope it comes out ok

Hey great. 9 minutes into a 14 minute video, and you haven't touched a piece of wood yet! Were you planning on talking the wood to death? I DON'T HAVE ALL NIGHT!
