Who doesn't need sharp knives? This sharpener is easy to use, but insanely accurate and produces an edge that's surgically sharp. And you can do it the easy way by 3D printing it, or the hard way from wood. I used beautiful solid hardwood for mine, but any scrap wood will work.
Stay tuned for an accessory that turns this knife sharpener into a precision chisel sharpener! Details on that will be on my Patreon soon.
The printer I used for this project was the Bambu Lab P1P and the filament was basic PLA.

This was great because of the side-by-side build comparisons. There was a lot of time invested in this, thank you John. Best Wishes, B.

Thanks Brendan. Making the wooden one wasn't bad because I already had all the details worked out for the 3D printed one. But the 3D printed one took nearly a full week to design, so definitely a lot of time in this one :)

I added a 3D printer to my arsenal a couple years ago to build my PrintNC, and it was my hope that I would still gain utility from it after that build. And I did, that utility primarily being in quickly designing and printing jigs and other small tools for the shop. So it's been a real thrill seeing what John Heisz does with one!

Very well done. The one I made a while ago clamps the knives between a wood square block and a large washer. Have to admit it sometimes doesn't hold a large knife in place during sharpening ( and more difficult to change sides) , this clamping system would solve that. The only thing mine has over yours is that some things are glued with ’’ construction adhesive ’’🤣 . Good video John 👍

It's interesting to see the differences in design for manufacturability when moving a design from (presumably) injection molded to wood and 3d printing.

Thanks for this, John. I'm bouncing back and forth on a sharpener. One like your wood one, but with some more metal parts like the jaws and round rod. These are pretty nice, quiet to use in the kitchen and easy to put away. And WAY less $$$$ than those Russian ones!!!! I was thinking 1" x 8" blocks for the sandpaper, but your short and wide ones seem to work good too. Or, build a little tilt angle table for my variable speed 3x21 belt sander, and use that. Faster and can do bigger and heavy blades, but would need to use it in the garage (not a big deal as it's attached to the house and just down the stairs). But it's a question of fine grit availability in that belt size.

Really nice work! I sharpen a bit with Tormek and Tsprof, and I would suggest thart You make another identical "sharpening stone" with e.g. a 1000 grit sandpaper on one side and "the green stuff" on the other to get the same angle when You are polishing. You have of course to compensate for the sand paper thickness and an additional tiny tiny bit to get a slightly steeper angle for the compound side...

Is there no flex in the plastic in that long rod that the diamond plate is attached to? It looks like it is so thin that it should bend a little, causing the angle of the plate to the knife edge to change. Really neat build. Sharpening knives is always a nightmare.
@Krynn72
@Krynn72 2 ай бұрын
Im guessing he used Pla plastic for this print, which is actually very rigid and more likely to break than bend. If there is any flex then it's probably insignificant. Other plastics might have more flex.
@JoeSchmoe-lq1uo
@JoeSchmoe-lq1uo 2 ай бұрын
The weight of the diamond plate is being supported by your hand when you hold the handle. The rod supports no weight (or very little), it's just there as a guide to help maintain the angle. If you're planning to make this and still concerned you can simply replace the plastic with a metal tube.

Those sharpening angles look quite steep. What's the range on a narrow blade like the smaller ones shown here? Nice video on the process, though a lot of sped up footage, which is pretty unpleasant to watch.

Nice build, but man, all I can think is how long until you stab yourself with it. Maybe not stab, because I am not afraid of pointy end, but that you will leave hand exposed under the stone and you will go too far and hit the blade. Maybe add end stop, so you can't go too far?

I doubt is razor-sharp. You can see some resistance on the paper as you cut it. Also, I assume holding the horizontal to the grid is not the best method.

At the 13-minute mark the actual sharpening machine is finally demonstrated. This is very frustrating because you go through making this whole device but we have no idea what all these parts are really supposed to be doing so it's just confusing and baffling. In the beginning you show a bunch of previous designs, and then at the one minute mark you give only a verbal description of what the new one is supposed to do. A lot of KZbinrs do this kind of thing, but that doesn't make it any less annoying. All the construction you're doing makes no sense when you don't know what the parts are supposed to be doing. So what a viewer really needs to do is skip to the end product I guess and then go watch the beginning of the video again. It would be a lot simpler and clearer if you just showed us what you're making and just how it works before you make it.
