I suppose there is no legal process if a nominee is added in the account. Go to the post office and ask it. A due diligence form is to be submitted with documents and hopefully you will get the balance.

Punjab National Bank bolta hai home branch pe ja ke KYC karao. Koi agar out of city hai or out of State hai jo nahi ja sakta. Usko facility milna chahiye ki koi bhi branch pe KYC ho sake.

When my NRI sister came to India and tried to close her Vijaya Bank SB account, the bank did not close it. They asked her to surrender cheque book. We had only passbook and passport. We traveled from Bangalore to Mysore for this. Rs.10,000 is stuck in account. Account is inactive for more than 15 years. We tried to close this account more than 10 years ago.

It is more difficult to close a bank account than to open one in india. I once wrote a complaint to RBI writing this and got a call from SBI Officer, he took all details and said he will help but I don't yet know whether the same is done. That account was having Rs. 1000/- Never got any further communication and I don't care.

In the past, people used to have many no.2 accounts without KYC. The bank needs full KYC to access the money in these accounts. People don't want Income Tax notices for claiming these accounts with 100-5000 of rupees. I personally know at least 5 accounts of different people who are not claiming the same due to that. As usual RBI/government is not concerned with returning this money. Instead they want to find targets who would claim some ruppes and ask them about all the transactions that happened 10-20years back. 🤦‍♂ As usual public knows what the government is up to that's why they are unclaimed.
