Audiences with Moritz von Oswald are few and far between. For years, he and his partner Mark Ernestus avoided the prying eyes of the media, creating a mystique that was almost as powerful as their records. Having practically invented minimal techno with Basic Channel, they then moved into the twilight world of dub, creating the Rhythm & Sound alias to explore the spaces beyond the bass line.
In this rare appearance at the 2008 Red Bull Music Academy, Moritz von Oswald talks about dub, his relationship with the New York reggae sound of Wackies and how his work has spawned a thousand imitators.

i really wanted to know more about his approach to production and how he made those rhythm & sound records so rich. clicked on this and every mouth breather asking in depth questions made me feel like im much better searching for that sound in my own work. this guy clearly doesnt want to give it up.

He did a lot for minimal Techno along with the detroit founders Jeff Mills etc. Fusing Dub more pronounced to the 124-127bpm spectrum. There are too many copycats which havent got that passion for Dub and Reggae like he has. If you're gonna do Dub Techno, its best to have an idea of how Dub goes, I hear too many of the same chords but rarely get that feel that Dub brings, its spiritual not commercial. Just my view.

Interviewer is garbage but it seems like MVO is being painfully obtuse at times... he is determined to give nothing specific about technique or hardware. Which I can appreciate, but then why do this kind of interview? This guy is an icon for so many, and I just imagine getting the chance to hear him go in-depth into his own music, and then him just rambling vague platitudes for an hour and a half and saying nothing...

Although I sympathise with his view on modern dub techno producers (some of whom make great dub techno soundscapes) copying BC, I think he's a bit dismissive. He could say he's flattered by the fact that so many of us still love the style & listening to it. It's genre like any other, and didn't disappear just because BC stopped producing it.

It is inconceivable for me that, specially in this kind of style where the music speaks for itself, you have removed all the sections where the artist intends to make his point by showcasing his music. What a nonsense!

A crying shame… but I do wonder if there were some more keen in the crowd that felt defeated and didn’t bother asking anything once they saw he was gonna keep giving advice like ‘take your time’ and ‘take it serious’ and more and more flat suggestions that are self evident to anyone who has put some time in making tracks

So Basic Channel's version of Mango Walk isn't a remix then. It's a cover, or a homage. But it's not a remix, if he didn't use the 2 track or multi track. The term remix, is just that: a remix of the original recorded tracks.
