I’ve yet to see a Yellowstone in person, but I also have been in the cab of a Big Boy. I visited 4014 several times when it was on display in Pomona, CA. Of course standing next to a Big Boy, you can see the massive proportions. However, those proportions don’t really get put into perspective until you go into the cab. Seeing the enormous stoker screw and seeing just how insanely large the firebox is on a Big Boy was an experience.

Historically the Big Boy and the Yellowstone would have had the same whistle: the Hancock long bell 3 chime. I guess you can't always trust the model train companies to get it right 😅. But that hooter sounds amazing regardless! And im just glad that the Yellowstone lives on through that beautiful model.

I'll probably never have enough room to field a layout with the wide-radius curves required to allow these locomotives to operate, but I want to thank you for showing them both in action. WOW!

Interesting to note as well. The Yellowstone Z-5 was produced in 1930, 11 years before the Big boy and was the largest locomotive at that time. The DM&I railroad specified this design after evaluating the Z-5 battle freight as a helper over Bozeman Pass in Montana. The NP Yellowstone had the worlds largest firebox to burn Lignite Coal found in that area.

When the 4014 came to Duluth the two were parked about 100 feet apart at the Depot museum. Too bad they couldn't drag the Yellowstone out for a side by side. It's tied down pretty well for the moving display. The neighboring GN N3 was no slouch either in ore service. At least what the Yellowstones hauled was made into tanks.
