I have the 746 (1957-60), 8100 (1981), and 18040 (1995) Lionel "J" locomotives in my collection. They all have unique numbers since the Postwar number is 746, the MPC number is 611, and the modern number is 612. They're all beautiful locomotives that are among the most prized pieces in my collection.

Nice video; I have the 1957 J746 locomotive, the coal tender, and the original caboose, but my late mother and father pitched the rest while I was overseas in the service. It brought back memories from when I got it for Christmas in 1957.

I like the MPC version myself. There is a charm to the original postwar J locomotive design and the postwar-style extruded aluminum passenger cars make a handsome set that was never offered during the postwar era. The paintwork and decoration are gorgeous. I even like the crude sound of steam and electronic whistle (although the chuff sounds would be better if there were more chuffs per wheel revolution). I still have the 1981 Lionel preview catalog containing the Powhatan Arrow set that I used to daydream about. I think this is hands down the best, most desirable set of the MPC era.
@RBPTrains

It is such a unique set. I really like the passenger cars on this one.

Just inherited a load of really nice prewar. Some of which had been on display most of its life. And a few MTH/Lionel prewar repro's. So it looks like I will be starting a layout this fall. I like how your layout flows.

Nice comparison, going to have to send out the dogcatcher for all of them... lol Growing up my father would always set up a train track around the Christmas tree and just like you mentioned the whistle in the postwar engines are so distinctive. Thanks again for sharing

@Thetindallman
@Thetindallman 2 жыл бұрын
For the old engines that have that older whistle, like on the postwar one, or the first one, if you take the coal car off, and press the whistle button, it will give the train an extra boost of energy, instead of slowing the train down, but it makes it dangerously fast. I found this out the hard way. This only works if the whistle feature is in the coal car like they usually were in the older ones.

@@delhatton at least thank God for the experience and remember that you still have the memories regardless of whether or not those engines still exist. In the very least N&W J Class #611 still exists. I would recommend looking up upcoming excursions to see where the 611 will be at. I went myself to the Museum of Transportation in Spencer, N.C. where the 611 was at that time. It was a great experience. To this day, I wish to put my hand on the throttle one day. At that time I was ten years old. I'm sixteen now and I will drive 611 one day should the Lord tarry.

@@samuelbenge524 So many train memories. My cub scout troop visited the Williamson rail yard. We were allowed to climb into the cab of one of the J's. I dined in the dining car. I slept in a pullman. We made day trips to Huntington. I watched Santa come to town on a train. A train was chartered to take us to Bluefield for a state football championship. At one time or another I traveled the entire line from Cincinnati to Norfolk.

At 4:13 you mention the side rods. I would endorse in HO Scale because it's less expensive and takes up less space, yet usually does not sacrifice detail for size. One of the main things I look at when I browse for locomotives is ALWAYS the side rods. I love the Walschaerts valve gear and it should be be a detailed as the rest of the locomotive.

I don't have a post-war, MPC, or MTH Premiere Class J, but I DO have an MTH "Bantam" one, it came as part of an MTH starter set I purchased in the early 2000's. I asked the nice lady working the train show display where I saw it "Excuse me, but is this yours?" "Yes it is" she said. "Good," says I, "In about 60 seconds it's gonna be MINE!" and out came the wallet! Great little runner! Pulls like a Clydesdale!

It's a progression of Lionel's eight-drivered locomotive series model numbers, that is "726" for the first Berkshire, "736" for the second, thus "746" for the Class J. What I can't figure out is why when Williams came out with a Class J they used the "746" number instead of the prototypical "611." Doesn't make sense, at least not to me.

I never heard about the suggestion coming from Sinatra, although it's possible. As I heard it a professional machinist and toy train fan here in Virginia took a Lionel 736 Berkshire and modified it into an N&W Class J, then sent it to Lionel with a "How about it?" note. Up at Lionel they took a look at it, asked themselves "Why didn't WE think of this?" and put it into production, although oddly without a passenger consist.

@@gusshadleythelunaticfromar7125 You're WAY out there! I live in Henrico County's "Far West End," I could throw a rock and hit Goochland County. I've never done so because someone might throw it back at me! I'm originally from New Jersey, moved here in 1987 and I'm glad I did! We were lucky enough to ride behind 611 during the old NS Steam Program days and were enraged when the program ended in 1994, the wife especially, she called 611 "My engine!" She loved its Art Deco streamlining and styling.

I'm unsure about this but if I'm right the 611 is the last of two kinds of locomotive. 1: obviously it's the last of the J's, and 2: correct me if I'm wrong but it's the last of the streamlined locomotive. That says a lot when you think on it.

It's the last of the streamlined steam locomotives that's operational. There's several Canadian streamliners preserved in museums, also a C&O "Yellowbelly" in the B&O Museum in Baltimore. Aside from 611 none are running.

This will sound defensive, but Lionel was the creator of the modern electric train. Every generation of Lionel ( or other brand) thereafter would take their name to build on. Lionel made toys although a bit pricey for their time not scale product. Postwar trains although seldom stored properly or lubricated still run today.. People of limited skill could repair them. Companies after benefitted by advances in decorating ,electronics, having a tried and true design to build on. In addition M.P.C. and later producers benefitted from a customer base of adults that were post war kids that had the money to buy the newer versions that they desired as children .It sounds defensive but if Joshua Cowen was still around he would have produced a product that would have given any of these companies a real run for their money. It was the original Lionel that created this fraternity of railroaders . Like many things mid century they were built in the U.S.A. in Irvington N.J. Now that said I do enjoy your presentation,and interest .It’s good to see young people in this hobby and the finishes and added detail is a welcomed treat. What can I say still have all my stuff from the late 40s and early 50s. Had to defend old school today.
