all technique revolve around a martial arts basic concepts. from there as long as teh practitioner knows that then they can create infinite variations on the basics. thats usually what advance material in MA are. variations on the basics.

i think he just meant to say that lots of style have similar concepts and getting hung up with faction of Martial arts make u miss those points.

well why not just invent techniques for situation instead of learning form another. did the gracies not invent new concepts and technique from pre existing judo?
