I made a thing! turns out the thing is slightly difficult to get on plane and behave like a fast airboat! Its easy to make an amphibious rc car but harder to make one that can go fast!

Being a hovercraft snob this just shows you anything can move with enough power thrown on it. My hovercraft circa 1991 had 13 HP and easily got 40 MPH with 400lbs payload. Yes, my current one has 40HP but only does 55 MPH. Should have made this a catamaran style good iterative design Peter

Look up the EFV. They did something similar with the tracks, retracting them for water operations, but they also had a plate to cover the holes. Your wheel wells would cause a lot of drag on water.

basebilljr07 I made one , no wheels is the answer, just water skids on a flat bit of foam with some tailerons and rudders and a prop up front, worked pretty well. Was a long time ago now and it died when water got into ESC followed by battery catching fire in the middle of the lake! Wish I had filmed that!

Dip the electronics in plastidip. Works fine. Most of the time i dip it 3 times just to be sure. Let it dry up between dips. Got the stuff in a jetboat and was under water a few times totally

I have been thinking of doing this with my Helion Rock Slider. I want the foam to come on and off easily. Just use the bigger tires for propulsion and steering. Peter definitely made it look doable. Mine won't be anything Peter Fancy.

If you employed pontoons, mounted laterally on either side of the vehicle on a hinged frame, you could use the same actuator that raises the tires to operate a lever that lowers the pontoons down into the water. This configuration would raise the entire center of gravity of the boat, as the pontoons would bear more of the weight, and lift the bottom of the vehicle chassis further out of the water . This would distribute the weight more to sides of the vehicle, and also reduce drag on the chassis. One other innovation you could employ, which could be easily integrated, would employ the wheel-lifting/pontoon-lowering actuator in an additional capacity. If you use the lifted tires themselves as a sort of pinion gear, or perhaps mount pinion gears to the wheels or the axles, you could use the wheel motors to power the fans. A single powerplant powering both land and water propulsion would surely improve efficiency. It's not really as complex a design as it may sound, as the process of lifting the vehicle onto the lowered pontoons and engaging the "pinion gears" could be combined into a single action.

you should do a catamaran outrigger on the car, instead of the wheels raising design it so the outrig lifts up and down from the top of the car. no mods to suspension and easier water displacement due to the cat design. 👌👌👍

You know what might work better? Have the car drive onto an amphibious platform and have the rear wheels power a water prop through a set of gears and have the front wheels lock into a mechanism that powers a rudder. Basically the front of the boat folds down and open which allows you to back the car into the partially launched boat. The car wheels meet up with the gears, the front of the boat closes then you can fully launch it into the water in reverse. Two separate vehicles that hook up to become one. My idea actually sounds a little more complicated but I think it would be cool.
