RC Body Vacuum Forming | Making a Ferrari 499P Hypercar

In 2023, Ferrari returned after 50 year to LeMans. They brought the brand new Ferrari 499P Hypercar... and won! Reason for me to make a 1/10th RC body replica of this great contender.
The body is running on a Tamiya TC-01 chassis.

This is awesome work, you're seriously talented! Besides the body itself looking literally spot on original, I'm especially impressed with the paintjob, stickerwork and attention to detail. I love it! How did you get so good at modelling the bodies with wood, just learning by doing? I'm guessing you use profiles too to help with the proportions?

Mostly just 3-view prints and a lot of pictures of the original car, if available also a 1:43 or 1:24 scale model car. For the 499p I had indeed only pictures and rough rendering from the side and top-down

Wow, great job with the whole process ... That turned out pretty much spot on ! What did u use for material , sounded like PTEG when u were removing the drivers cockpit .. Anyway congrats on a sweet piece

Thanks! I'm using both PETG and Makrolon. For a new mold the first time often PETG before I move on to Makrolon because it is more easy to use and it is showing if I made a mistake with the mold. In this case, there was an undercut at the end of the air inlet which I realized when I wanted to take the cockpit out. Next one will be Makrolon, which is more durable in my experience.

Makrolon is a brand name of Polycarbonate - actually Lexan is also the same. But in Germany, it is easier to get Makrolon. Don't even know any source where to buy Lexan brand. Makrolon I'm using 0.8mm sheets, if stronger I need a higher vacuum.

Was there any reason not to scribe in the window and door lines into this mold? Does the lines make it harder to vacuum form?

I wasn't sure if it would look good on these Hypercar bodies. So I made the body first without it and maybe I will use a pen liner to draw doors, hoods etc. I haben't done so yet but I'm still thinking to do it...

Nice job but it would have been a lot faster/easier to CAD and 3D print the tool. If you don't have a printer, send the file to someone that does.

I prefer the good old craftmanship. It makes more fun to work with my own hands. And for a relaxing hobby, I don't want to be in front of a screen... But that's only my personal preference 🤘
