That controller talk reminds me of my brother's uni project. They had to build a drone from scratch and it turns out gyro's are really expensive, but some xbox controller had a better gyro inside and was only a fraction of the cost. So they bought 4 controllers just to smash and salvage. The drone worked great!

To comment on the controller operated surgeries, I've witnessed a robotic laproscopy when I was in college and the surgeon blew my mind when he sat down at a little terminal screen looking thing and used a controller to perform some of the cauterizations of bleeds. Crazy stuff indeed!

In some Japanese arcades they have a Gundam game where you can pilot your own mobile suit and it's a legit cockpit with two hand joysticks with triggers and thumb buttons, foot pedals and even a of course motion and rumbling on the seat! It's epic, theirs even a star wars star fighter game where you can pilot a tie fighter! Super insane and fun

The speed that you can turn an axel would be limited with a controller, but a wheel can be spun with your hands an fast and precise as needed. Controller could still work i guess, it does work in ets2
