Hi, just an aero question: Why did you say that it works better when taking off slowly? Thinking of using it at a high initial velocity . Is that wrong?

You have to take off slowly to allow the rotor to build up speed and become "stable lifting surface" (at highest autorotative rpm) before taking off. If the rotor is not allow to spin up to full rpm it will not take of easy. If you take off too fast it will simply tip over as the rotor has not had the proper time to become a stable lifting surface (full rpm). Model with pre-rotators, including this one (on the model but I am not using it for purpose of illustration take off by natural rotor spin up due to wind), will be easier to get the rotor up to full rpm. However, Pre-rotators not required, in fact on "small models", I don't recommend due to the unnecessary mechanics and complexity, keep it simple and you will have less headaches learning to fly these models. If you have a nice head wind, the MIA Gyrocopter rotors spin up pretty fast, even without wind a hand spin up and brisk walk will get the rotor to full rpm quickly and you can hand toss it, as I show in many of my videos.
