Kicking off what I hope to to be one of the most insane RC cars ever built. Advanced electronics, F1 style suspension, and downforce galore.

love your channel - if you don t follow regulations - you could try to mount the wings to the uprights directly - like the i think lotus did in the 70s ...?

I’ve thought about unsprung aero like that. For this car it would be hard to place the rear wing far enough forward to mount to the suspension. The rear wing interacts strongly with the rear diffuser to increase downforce. I think with an open wheel car that would be easier or if the rear wing mount was made from some ultra stiff material like carbon fiber.

Love your stuff. Have a good level of experience in most of these areas from TT02's to Speed run cars. Would share that for a speed run RC car, focusing on light weight doesn't matter that much. Powerful motors and more voltage can really send just about anything that's 10x the weight of this faster than you're aiming for at this scale. Really focusing on low weight really seems like a distraction or artifact of either low power applications or real size applications. I think it'd be really awesome to see you tackle the aerodynamics and electronics parts, which has the potential tp be truly innovative for an RC car and is meaty in itself. Traction control, active aero, active suspension and other things like that seem really interesting. Can always come back and shave weight once functional. Looking forward to this project.

I think this is going to be more of a cornering car and acceleration car in this configuration. With some tweaks to the body I could obviously build a top speed version. I'll cover it more in the aero video, but this thing has massive massive amounts of aero drag in an attempt to generate downforce at reasonable speeds.

I've had more problems from having too much downforce than I have from not having enough downforce when adding aero. Best of luck...I look forward to seeing it progress.

I was inspired by your project and how everyone said that an RC car couldn't generate downforce. I'm adding heave springs to help manage the downforce. I'm curious to see how far I can push it, I'll probably tear up some tires with the adding lateral forces.

@@IndeterminateDesign the project I'm working right now was just too unbalanced. The triple element rear wing would squat the rear so much that the undertray eventually had a positive angle of attack causing it to go airborne like the Mercedes CLR. I can't wait to see how well you can make a car perform with some smarts and full custom design. I want to book time on a 1/8 dragstrip this year. Are you ever in the area?
@IndeterminateDesign
@IndeterminateDesign Жыл бұрын
Yeah, CFD showed pretty quickly this car was going to be front downforce limited. I think the front wing is almost 2 inches wider than the rear wing trying to get it to stay down. Ideally I'd have 4-5 elements on the front wing to make it less sensitive to pitch changes (shorter overall cord for the same lift). I'm pretty sure I will be in the area this summer. Out west right now in the snow.

no rear wing to much drag on a straight line and it will compromise vmax on your can maybe ditch the rear wing and use 2 edf fans on the bottom with a split under carage to create ground effect and and a blown difuser to expand the air with a 3:1 angle and you shoud add a towered wing on the wheel covers instead of wing lets

I'll get into this more in the aero video, but this isn't going to be a top speed car in this configuration. I wanted to have usable downforce for cornering. Very similar to an FSAE car where you need massively oversized wings to achieve downforce below 60mph. Realistically this car will top out around 80mph.

Great stuff! Truly amazing! Looking forward to seeing how this project turns out! Also, have you had a look at the raptor II from thehardwareguy? He mounted the motors inboard so that he didn't have to worry about unsprung mass. While it may neglect the aero benefits, maybe with some clever positioning... I guess it will depend on the level to which your direct drive system hampers the drive quality. You got me triggered with this new project ahahahahha
@IndeterminateDesign
@IndeterminateDesign Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the upspring mass isn't ideal but I hope the aerodynamics will be the biggest driving factor for the performance. If I can package an active suspension then I can overcome a lot of this as well.

Looks great so far. Looking forward to your progress. I just built a car with the a arms as big airfoils for downforce. Also going to put an edf in my 200+ build for extra downforce making it a sucker car.

That's awesome! That's a great concept to have the a-arms be air foils. A fan car is a really cool idea for making low drag downforce. I've thought about make a drag racer with a fan just to test it out. Let me know how it goes. Speed is an addiction for sure.

@@IndeterminateDesign nothing quite at the quality of your builds but more of a proof of concept test vehicle. One thing I am realizing is that these cars need tons of downforce. My 1/7 car does not get good traction till 100 mph. Currently at 146 mph on 4s with it and it's got a lot more in the tank!

I don't know about the quality of mine, the camera hides many sins. 😂 Wow, a 146mph is crazy fast on just 4s. You must have a huge motor in that thing.

I have seen their car. I think the chassis is a cool design and I like what they're trying to do with the electronics. I'm not seeing as many sensors as I would have expected, so I'm not sure it has traction control and torque vectoring. Looking at that car really inspired me to try and use off the shelf components as much as possible for the first version of this car because I think they spent a huge amount of time on their electronics. I also think there's a lot of room for improved aerodynamics. Of course my car is going to be soooo much harder to assemble.
@supadeluxe

@@IndeterminateDesign They may have had constraints on chassis design as they were making a retail product. Has to be easy to assemble and work on. We all know the stuff that is hard to put together is the best stuff, so looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Could you compensate for the unsprung weight with unsprung aero?
@IndeterminateDesign
@IndeterminateDesign Жыл бұрын
Yes potentially. I love the concept of un-sprung aero and I know several FSAE teams that have worked this. I think that's something I'll have to try later down the road though as I'm still not sure the suspension and chassis design will work, and if the the wings generate meaningful downforce.

I really enjoy your content. My favorite project of yours is the active suspension. I'm a little confused at the overall focus of this project. Your previous projects have had features rarely seen in RC cars, and felt like you were really pushing the boundaries of RC technology. For active suspension, despite using a 20 year old RC chassis, you showed a solid proof of concept with great potential. For this project, I'm having trouble seeing the potential. Direct drive is interesting but I feel like I would rather watch you convert an existing RC car to direct drive rather than watch you spend a lot of time fabricating one from scratch with well-established methods. A carbon-fiber monocoque doesn't really excite me since I don't see the potential application. Speedrun cars main limitation isn't weight, and touring race cars main limitation isn't mass production. So I'm not sure where this car would fit, and I fear it may end up like the Mammuth Stealth.

I agree there are a lot of conflicting goals for this project. The biggest thing I wanted to try was high levels of downforce at reasonable speeds (

@@IndeterminateDesign Like @RazorConcepts, I love your content, been watching for a long time and I find your projects pretty inspiring. But the possibility of ending up in the Mammuth Stealth realm is one that immediately came to mind as well. I will note that more chassis stiffness is not always better, and with an overly stiff chassis coupled with high unsprung mass (especially unevenly distributed front to rear and crossways) you may find that you have a nearly impossible to control vehicle on your hands. For a little inspiration check out Raz Shiffrin's speed run cars and take a look at some modern touring cars from Awesomatix for example. Fully constructive comment here, best of luck with the project!
@IndeterminateDesign

Yeah, I figured there will a be a lot challenges with the chassis. I'm hoping to make it a bit too weak and then strengthen it from there. I think that's been the mistake in my past RC cars is that I was too worried about something failing so they were very overbuilt or overly complex.
