Ivan's project is a dramatic effort, particularly the engine, that is a jewel of engineering. The one thing to remember is that a sailplane was flown approximately 80mph faster (548mph/882kph)two years ago. It is under Dynamic Soaring here, the sailplane (an original design and construction) is nearly or is getting to the transonic range of speed and is near faster than any aircraft from WWII or the 3Km FAI propeller powered aircraft. Keep trucking Ivan, a powered aircraft record is huge.

As a designer, i would have gone another way around: use the same engine, but instead make the aircraft more aerodynamically efficient. Which seems possible, with a reduced wingspan, and maybe take off assistance from a rocket motor or a towing aircraft or even a catapult/winch as the one used for the rc gliders. And maybe a more simple engine like a ram jet would be enough, with a leduc style air intake to erase as much drag as possible. But let's be honest, i wouldn't do it, because i don't have your knowledge. And i thank you for sharing about your dev! I wish you good luck!

The sacrifices you do today are the ones you will not have to do later, trust me. And do not worry you'll have enough to buy 10 in a few years ... But then again even if you did have the money, why should you? Coming back to what I was saying, me being broke enabled me to learn and adapt. It was out of necessity. I need the thing to do the things or else I am screwed even worse than I am. This gave me knowledge and perspective. I have way more respect for the kid with a 5k car that's manual, does his own maintenance, is paid for, than the dude riding in his Maseratti maintained by the dealership owned by the bank at yolo costs.

Did you know a glider went 548 mph using 30 mph winds off a mountain? It is driven both by pilot and computer. The circle it completes is under 2 seconds. So not that fun to fly. 120g of force so the weight is distributed into the wings.

Good luck. In the hobbyist realm, it seems no powered aircraft have come within range of the transonic speeds of dynamic soaring gliders - and those things are ridiculous. (Sometimes they shatter apart from the stresses of flying and explode into bits and pieces of fiberglass or carbon fiber before even hitting the ground.) The only remote controlled aircraft to go faster are owned and operated the governments of various countries.

If your existing engine can get you up to speed you could get more power by building a mode-switching ramjet engine around it which simply moves the shock cone & opens internal intakes to bypass the turbojet engine once the blades of the engine itself start to get in the way. …just have to get going fast enough that you no longer need moving parts to get achieve the pressures required for the engine to operate & can just dump fuel in to achieve supersonic speeds. Go ceramic or liquid cooled shell. Also can play around with shape-memory alloys to replace hydraulics just by controlling the temperature of a metal rod.

Ambitious goals. But you cannot safely fly RC plane by line of sight at those speeds, simply can not see. You will need to fit long distance FPV system to be able to see and fly properly. It’s a guided missile at that point. Good luck on your project!

I'm not sure if this would help with the problem of the underpowered engine, due to possible weight increase, nor if it would it even be needed because of the afterburner you designed ; but have you thought about using a ram/scramjet instead of the afterburner? you could use your underpowered engine to get the jet to an appropriate speed, then use the ram/scramjet to break the record and maybe even achieve Mach.
