Wow thanks! Yeah, I worked pretty hard on it and I still have a lot to improve. I felt really self-conscious about this one for some reason, I just could see all the flaws and wasn't sure if it was good enough. I guess it can only get better from here!

With the energy needed to drive the rotor, does this cost more or less than the energy gained from harnessing the wind power this way?

I don’t know exactly, but it uses very little power compared to a propeller driven craft because all it has to do is spin. However, technically it uses more power then just using a sail with a couple servo motors, but it can work at lower wind speeds and is much more controllable with very little complexity compared to a sail. So, over all, I think it’s a bit of a toss up. But it does have some great Benefits, for example: you can easily sail in reverse with no mechanical changes.

When the wind direction was longitudinal to the channel and the model was transversal, evidenced by the waves, the model reached a higher speed.

Yeah! This type of sail boat is the most efficient when at 90 degrees from the wind direction and thrust gradually decreases the closer you get to parallel (even though, paradoxically, the sail creates the same amount of thrust. It’s just not in a direction that can actively push the vehicle forward). Pretty interesting! Sailing is an interesting craft which I haven’t quite mastered. I really need to make the sail thicker to create more thrust. Right now the rotor just barely has enough speed to move the boat.
